Who has one and what are the pros and cons.

I'm not interested in the 9.3x62 or the other 9.3's

Just thinking of building one.

I have one. IMO best thing is the fact that it´s quite easy to fit .30-06 -sized Mauser 98 action. It has enough power for most animals in U.S.A and Europe, you could self load it very near of .375 H&H's power. Compared 9,3x62, which is nice caliber too, you just could shoot heavier bullets to longer distances. Bad thing is lack of factory loads, I know only RWS which makes proper hunting ammo for 9,3x64.

had mine nearly 30 years now. Back then there was no loading data in Oz here so I wrote away to Mulwex (Thales ADI now) They came back with a loading suggestion & I went from there.
RWS is the only cases you can get for this cartridge, Rebel gunshop QLD has RWS gear including projectiles. Of course Woodleigh now makes then in 286 & 320gn protected points as well as the hydros so we're covered there.
Mine is built on a Mark X action, nothing fancy that's for sure has a 4x Leopold scope in a QD mount for the longer shots.
easy to fit in & minimal action work.
Cases last a very long time even with heavy loads
Can give you those loads if you get that far
My reduced loads using 270 gn Speers just drill pigs end to end!

Brenneke also make factory ammunition however at the moment there is no importer for Brenneke products in Australia.
Outdoor Sporting Agencies are the importer in Australia for RWS and they bring in a good range of ammo. They are also happy to bring in one-off special orders, usually with a minimum quantity. You have to deal with Danny the owner, some of the other sales rep don't seem to know what is going on or are to lazy to care.

Thanks for the info fella's.its always good to hear from those in the know.

I haven't any idea of a "fancy" build a commercial 98 action will do.this cal or the 416 CT has been on my mind.
Interesting that there is an article on old Brenneke himself in this weeks SSAA mag too.

Hello gryphon,

I can recommend the 9,3x64 if you have access to the cases.
In my opinion the 9,3x64 is the ballistic twin to the .375 H&H, but more precise due to the standard case design (without a belt).
My impression is that you do not have to trim the cases as often as in the 375 H&H.

bullets and use:
- 255grs RWS Doppelkern and 232grs Norma PPC Oryx for somewhat reduced loads/smaller game
- the 250grs TSX or 250grs Accubond for longer ranges
- the 270grs Speer for training (szihn reported that it is a little bit soft on game)
- 286grs TSX or Woodleigh PP for larger game
- Reichenberg HDB are coated monometal bullets, available in some weights and very precise

A 24" barrel may be the best barrel length, as the 9,3x64 uses medium to slow burning powders.
Precision was only bad with severe downloaded cartridges, but I found it very precise with all bullet weights from 225grs to 286grs in standard velocity loadings.

little collection of 9,3x64 cartridges: RWS, DWM, older Brennecke made by DWM, Barnaul lacquered steel case and brass plated steel case (yes, reloadable if you have 6,45mm berdan primer)

you see the TUG load was offered by everyone ever made it in germany

imho, the 9,3 is the better cartridge

made today beside of the only RWS load with the TUG bullet

My standard of any non-Aust purchase is at least $500 extra per firearm to get to and into Australia, considering permits, customs fees etc. For the average firearm the savings are usually not worth it, but for higher priced stuff often cheaper, and of course for rare and vintage stuff, often the only opportunities require it.

My mate has a 9.3x64. Then he got a 8x64 built and now that's his to go gun. Got nothing against the 9.3x64 but the 8x64 belts out reasonable size projectiles at reasonable rates. Just saying.

Just love the round! its ability to be spead up With a 250grn bullet for some distance shots or pumped up with 320grners for the big guys.
My one even recoils less than one if my 9.3x62s and even has a lighter profile barrel...

nice rig you got there - bloody good porker too!
Try the 270gn Speers just drill through pigs end to end, with 55gn AR2208 or IMR4064 for about 2100fps with standard primers

When does this project start Gryph? I know a bloke who runs a 9.3x62 in a Ruger No1. Tugs work well on Sambar, in fact they work well on most critters!!

I've owned FN M98s in both 9.3x62mm and 9.3x64mm, as well as a Win pre-64 M70 .375 H&H Mag. I honestly liked the FN 98s better due to them being a bit more compact and having a better fitting stock. I would fully rate the 9.3x64 with the .375, both love to be loaded with 4350/2209 powder. I only got the 9.3x62mm because the recoil is less and brass is cheaper. Now it seams to be my got too rifle. I say do the project, the world needs more 9.3x64s.

I have been interested in the 9.3X64 for quite some time. It is a cartridge that deserves more credit that it is getting. I have heard that the Russian army are now using it as their answer to our .338 Lapua. I think it is the same cartridge with the same C.I.P. specifications. An interesting point is that from the 1970s on Steyr Mannlicher chambered their rear locking lug rifles in this caliber. That is not the case with their newest rifle, nor is the M12 Mauser chambered for this round. Pity I would have liked to have purchased one. It is really great cartridge. I guess I will have to stay with my .375 H&H

I just can't understand why it is not taken up by more rifle companies?
It really is a very efficient & compact cartridge for the oomph that it delivers.
