unusual scope mount for a Mannlicher rifle - info needed
      #274893 - 11/12/15 08:19 AM

A friend just purchased this Mannlicher - but without a scope and rings. Does anyone have any idea what the rings would look like to fit the mounts on the rifle?

These mounts were developed during WW1 by the Danzig arsenal for sniper use. The solid rings were soldered to the steel scope tubes. Apparently a gunsmith adapted a surplus scope and mount to the Mannlicher –Schoenauer Stutzen after the Great War. Quite hopeless to find spare parts now, 100 years later. Here are pics from Dieter Storz's book "Gewehr und Karabiner 98", Vienna 2006.

Hello kuduae,

I thank you again for your most informative reply and answer to my question. My friend will be happy to know this information and I will pass it on to him. However, he will be very dissappointed to learn of the slim chance of finding such a set or rings to complete his rifle.

He would of course be happy to find such a scope with the original rings attached, in "any" condition, wheather it is working or not.

If anyone sees such a scope with these mounts for sale, please contact me.

Hi,
Am I missing something here? How does the bolt operate with the rear mount across the split bridge behind the bolt handle?

Hello LesLeeSpeed,

The rear base is catilever mounted from the left side and the bolt handle passes under the base.

Hi,
Thanks for that, I can now see that there is sufficient height to allow the bolt to pass under the mount. Most I have seen are offset.

If you know of someone that could make a set of mounts and rings for the bases on this rifle, please contact me also.

Check out this thread of mine...it may help. To fit up to date bases/rings those on there now would have to be (front) un-soldered with new soldered into place & rear new installed I think. Cheers, deeangeo
