Fletcher Jamieson Rifle image - .500 NE double rifle?
      #274582 - 05/12/15 09:09 AM

Looking for an image which used to be on the net. Maybe someone has it 'archived' or know a current link to it on the net?

A Zambian or other Southern African outfitter used to have an image on their home page of a sidelock double rifle in .500 Nitro Express which was reported as belonging to Fletcher Jamieson. The image was the "collage" sort with a black background, of the rifle on a desk with other of the usual bits and pieces, such as warthog or hippo tusks, bits and pieces.

I used to have this as a background or screen saver on an older PC which gave up some time in the past.

Any ideas?

Did Fletcher Jamieson use a .500 NE double rifle? I think it was a Holland & Holland. Most references are to his Mauser bolt action in .500.

Fletcher had an early Holland & Holland 500/450 3 1/4" magnum Royal.

Will dig up some details

This link to an early post describes the rifle and the letter Jamieson placed in the butt.

Somewhere on this site is a photograph of the rifle, I think when it was sold, to a collector in the USA

Here is a post with his 500 Jeffery and a photograph of the 500/450.

Thanks. Don't think I had seen the DR love letter thread before.

Quote:

Holland and Holland Royal .500/450 Nitro Express that was made in 1902, also used and owned by Fletcher Jamieson.

I have another image of this somewhere on one of my PCs.

As I wrote on the second link, that is the image I am looking to replace!

Any one have it on their PCs or if it is still on the net somewhere, please supply!

Maybe it is still on one of my old PCs but a search in the past didn't find it. I had a desktop that lost all its files. The data directory at considerable cost was restored but a background image is located in a different directory.

Interesting that he mentions 3 other rifles, a .577, Winchester .25-20, and 6.5 Mannlicher. I wonder where they are?

I suppose the Winchester must have been a Model 92 - did they make the 94 or 64 in that caliber? Could also have been an 1885 single shot or a Model 43 bolt gun, though the latter may be too late for the period. Of course, this assumes he was referring to a .25-20 Winchester rifle and not to the cartridge. If he was speaking of the cartridge, the rifle could have been a Remington 25 pump gun or at least one or two others.

It's not a close up, but this picture shows him holding the rifle.

Somewhere I think I have an old Magnum article featuring the rifle in detail. I will search

I remember an article, it described the restoration of the rifle and discovery of the letter under the butt pad. Now I am wondering if it was one of John Ormiston's articles in an early African sporting gazette ? The magnum articles I have are about his .500 Jefferey (also an article by Fletcher Jamison himself including a photo of him holding the H&H rifle with a rhino - great shame he was unable to write a book).

I've seen all three of those pictures, maybe in John Taylor's "African Rifles and Cartridges". My son has my copy now so I can't say for sure.
Best.

The image I am looking for may well be from a magazine article as it was a composed "collage" image.
