Spearfishing Garrthalala

Spearfishing Garrthalala

Many people have contacted us regarding Episodes 1's (HONEY ISLAND) spearfishing scene, and wanted to see more. So we've uploaded some bonus footage of the session. We can't express how fun it is to spend time with the people of Garrthalala outstation, they are the most warm and generous people you will ever come across, and have a joyous approach to life that is infectious. Simmo and I feel extremely privileged to call them friends.

Good accuracy with that Atlatl. Looks like fun!

Good stuff.

Daryl: the name Atlatl is never used in Australia, known here as 'woomera'. It seems the early Europeans and our Aussie indigenous mob probably came up with it before the central American peoples, even though it is the Aztec name that has endured in the US and Canada.
Even among primitive cultures, a good engineering principle like leverage wouldn't lie dormant for long!

Atlatls were used in North America by a few tribes, I think.

My brother and I made a couple up, along with 6' long "darts" with replaceable obsidian and flint heads (called footed shafts). We used heavy hardwood "foots" with 160gr. arrow field points for good flight. The 'tail' end was steered by 6" fletches, just like arrows.

We threw them all one afternoon at a Highschool's football field. The next day, we had the worse case of tendenitis EVER! The pain was excruciating.

After getting over that, we threw a little, daily and worked up to it. It was fun and quite decent accuracy could be obtained at up decent ranges - 150feet or so. Max flight was over 200feet.

My atlatl's handle was 26" long. We were both "spear chuckers" in high school 'track and field' and base ball players so throwing long and hard was common to both of us.

Yep when it is an Aussie blackfella throwing it, it is called a woomera.

Aussie blackfellas have been using woomeras for 30,000 years at least.

I need one to go with my two Aboriginal spears.
