Pretty nicely done but one wonders why it isn't a W.R. 1897 instead of a Farquharson.
Westley Richards didn't make many Farquharsons in period.

Beautiful rifle.

I did ask the question where the action was from.

I got the impression that they made it themselves

I'd seen the same rifle and was planning to display it here. So will put it up on this thread. Good find.

Hello All,

The action used for this rifle started out as an Army & Navy PD Farquharson. It ended up with me to convert it to takedown and generally tidy it up for use.I'm not sure of its original calibre but it was certainly smaller than the 450/400 it is now.It took a bit of juggling around to get the larger cases to load and eject properly. Also converting it to takedown meant a new extractor and cutting away the barrel threads to clear the extractor when the rifle was open, allowing the barrel to turn out of the action.
The reason Westley's didn't start from scatch with this is down to cost.Making one off firearms is a very expensive business and the trouble with Farquharsons is that most of the people that would love to own a new one(and I dont mean machined to death, modern thing)can't really afford them. You need to factor in expensive wood, engraving and the finishing, aswell as making the action.
It came out well and I'm really suprised at the interest it's generated. As a Gunmaker I love Farquharson rifles but have lost the desire to build them these days as they dont make any money.
I hope that clears up a few questions.

Thanks pugwash. Would have been great to see some progress photos. It looks lovely.

I guess that is the reason they didn't use square threads for the takedown, like the WR magazine rifles?

Do you do double rifle actioning?

Cheers, Chris

I have some boxlock doubles on the go at the moment for W.J.Jeffery as well as a pair of shotguns.Progress photo's will be posted when I have something to show. Its taken a long time because I've been let down by my machinist, but I'm off to see another next week.
The Rifles are an almost exact copy of an early Number 3 actioned 450/400.They will look very similar to the Jim Corbett rifle with the same engraving aswell.
I also Action Guns for one of the London makers but I cant really share that with you as they get a bit funny about it.

Pugwash, thank you very much. That is very useful information.

Is there a video featuring yourself?

Theres a couple on youtube. If you put in M.Mitchell Gunmaker you will find them.
Both were very unprepared for as I didn't know they were going to happen, but you can see what I get up to.The longer of the two shows the pattern rifle for the Jeffery's although not close up.

Thanks Pugwash. I will look that up.

It rang a bell that's why I asked. I viewed one some time ago.

Best wishes, Chris

Does anyone have any pts of the Rafiki and 4 bores they mention? I'd love to see both.
