annother interesting project
      #273356 - 16/11/15 02:31 PM

having just posted over on the double rifle building forum ,and talking extensively wiht a few members i just had an interesting thought . If you can build a double rifle on a shotgun action why not a creative singleshot on a single shot action using the barrel methods listed in the ellis book ? i have one 12ga 'long tom' action and one h&r topper 12 ga action I know h&r has the handi rifle but I was thinking a little more custom on classic lines ,would be great practice for building my double slug gun a rifle style butt stock with a rifle comb and cheek piece followed by a classic style beaver tail type fore end as the barrel will be a sleever type it could have a heavier profile and tapered shape caliber thoughts ? hmm 45/70 ,50/90 etc 22 hornet since all but the 50/90 is offered on the handi rifle the action should handle the pressure ,now let the games begin thanks smitty

Not sure on the .50/90 on a light action single shot. For a hunting rifle that is not shot much - I guess it's OK.

This is my bro shooting his Shiloh Sharps .50/90, with a 28" #3 Magnum taper McGowen barrel. The rifle weighs 11.4 pounds and after shooting a bunch with the BP loads, he complains of the recoil. He's shooting 91gr. Swiss 1 1/2 with a 600gr. bullet.

Yeah - I know, compared to a .500 Nitro, it doesn't kick, however when you are shooting a rifle competition comprised of perhaps 30 or more rounds, that number of rounds does add up and wears on you after a while.

I used it at rendezvous last Sept, picking up 2nd place in the Quigley match. Taylor got 3rd. and buddy Len, from our city, won 1st with his Navy Arms .45/70. Must have fried him a bit with me beating him with his own rifle, but then, he shot first after each range change and I got to see the hits, 2 shots at each - all offhand except for 2 targets out to 650yards & as close as 110yards. That was a fun match.

I've shot a 577 BPE built on an H&R 12 gauge. I like to think I have enough sense to resist that temptation again. . . but I'm not sure I do! If I were to seriously consider such a project I'd give thought to something along the lines of the .405 Winchester/.40-70 S.S.

I've built a single shot 12 bore rifle on a single shot hammer action.

.40-70 SS=40-70 Sharps Straight. There are two chambers, one based on blown out (and sometimes slightly stretched) 30-40 Krag brass, the other uses trimmed and sized .405 Winchester brass. Were it me, I'd look at a .405 Winchester, and call it a .40-70 straight when loaded with black powder.

I have a 12b Francotte single barrel trap gun which I plan on doing the same with and also think, as you do, that it would be a great way to hone some skills needed before tackling a double.
Thinking a 20bore chambered for Magtech brass cases would be fun or even stick with 12b as Casper did or maybe even cut and dress the barrel and try roundballs in it first. Never know, might be a great smoothbore right out of the gate.
Of course, a 500No.2 BPE is always an option. I seem to gravitate toward those.

the 500 no.2 is my favorite also. I've had a couple of singles in that caliber. If I had the cash I'd have a double.

Right in the middle of the Province, Smitty - exact centre.
There is another, more modern version of the .47/70, which uses a necked .45/70 case. Of course it won't hold 70gr. of black powder, but would hold more than a straightened .30/40 Krag case.

Mike Venturino took this necked .40/70 to Africa on a trip, using 400gr. jacketed bullets at around 1800fps - in a Sharps replica. A stronger action would make 2,000fps I'm sure, almost .450/400 stuff, but of course, not at 35,000psi.
