Auction Find. Colt Army Model 1917 45ACP revolver.

So I went to an estate auction today. The gentleman who passed was a serious gun collector. All of the pieces were in fantastic condition. There were three revolvers that I was interested in. A New York State police S&W Model 520. A Colt Army Model 1917 and a S&W Model 65 with a 3" barrel. First up was the Model 520. My pain threshold was $600.00. It sold for $875.00. Next up was the Model 1917. I expected it to also go soaring pass my cut-off. But ,as I listened to the bidding, I was surprised at how sluggish it was. The auctioneer eventually dropped it down to $200.00 before anyone started to bid. Well I jumped in and won with a bid of $550.00. Now figure in the Buyer's Premium (10%) and the Idaho Sales Tax (6%) and the final figure was $641.30, but I'm satisfied with that price. Very clean and mechanically it's in excellent condition. Serial number is 304*** . Seems appropriate with it being the 100th anniversary of World War I. Incidentally this is a massive revolver. It weighs in at 40 ounces unloaded. However even though it was made under wartime conditions the craftsmanship is excellent.

Nice find! Superb condition.
Those old Colt 1917 revolvers are a hoot to shoot.

Hundredth anniversary? That was last year for us!

Nice pick up! Do you have any of those half moon clip things for it?

Well actually the U.S. 100th anniversary for WWI isn't until April 2017, but i didn't want to wait that long. Yes I have several half-moon clips. Actually the first 50,000 (approximately) Model 1917 revolvers made by Colt had chambers so large that without the clips the 45 ACP cartridge would literally fall all the way through the cylinder. The Army had Colt machine in a shoulder in the cylinder chambers so that in a tight situation a soldier could load the 45 cartridges and fire it. The catch is the user will then need to poke out the empty casings with a pencil or something like that. The star extractor won't remove the rimless cartridges of the 45ACP without the clips. So I can fire the it without the clips, but I won't.

Took it to the range yesterday. Put eighteen rounds of Blazer 230 grain hardball through it. Shot the center out of the target from 12 yards. The 41 ounces made for a very soft shooting revolver. Akin to a 38 Special. The double action trigger is heavy, but smooth. Not grit and even the infamous Colt stacking wasn't bad. I know some will not agree with me actually firing some rounds through it, but it's a revolver. It should be fired if only now and again. I do have a couple safe queens, but this warhorse needs to get out now and again I think. Sorry. No photos.

Wow that is a lovely revolver. Can't believe the condition.

100yrs ago today my Grandfather was fighting at Gallipoli. His diary makes for interesting reading, in a clinical sort of way.

Thank you for sharing that. Those and the S&W's from that era are great. And the Colt 1911's. They were very nice to.
