Where to buy locks and who builds a Snap-Matchlock?
      #272751 - 06/11/15 11:14 PM

Hey guys,

I remember being guided to a website that had like a hundred different muzzle loading lock designs for sale. I can't find it for the life of me.

2nd question! Does anyone know who builds snap matchlocks? Thinking about buying a lock to muse with.

Cheers!
Troy.

A normal matchlock as you squeeze the trigger it lowers the match, on the snap lock it works like when a percussion hammer fires - snaps the match down onto the pan instead of lowering it in accordance to your trigger pull.

This is a normal matchlock https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=r6YZmkxY7JA

The snap version uses a spring. Apparently it has a tendency to put out the match (but still fire the gun), so was less popular with soldiers.

I'd expect the match would go out momentarialy when it slammed down into the pan of powder, the lit end would spray sparks and ignite the charge. Then the flame flying out the vent would quite likely re-light the match - or perhaps not always re-light it, which would be nasty in a battle situation.

As far as who builds one, I do not know. You could post a request on www.americanlongrifles.org I suppose.

Thanks, Daryl I'm sure there's SOMEONE out there who does. I mean people still build wheel locks so surely someone can do a match lol.

Yes- there are some custom gun makes who do make wheellocks, like this 17th Century Dag my brother built, lock stock and barrel. Real silver inlays and ebony stock.
2 wheels, one for iron pyrites and one for flint. Ignition seems like a centrefire rifle- instantaneous with the touch of the single set trigger. Very accurate and easy to shoot, but weird hold.
A matchlock would be so easy in comparison.

I am quite fortunate to have him for a brother and he's living in the same city as I - only 7 minutes away - 10 if the traffic is heavy. LOL
I was going to removed the picture with the address, but thought not necessary afterall.

Hope you don't mind, Ash. I had him sporterize my fullstocked longrifle, made by a fellow in Chilliwack BC back in the 70's.
I didn't like the pins holding the barrel on and wanted a captured key. Note the curly maple underrib. He also had to make the forend cap, of course and did the work without any damage to the original finish.

Thanks Daryl!

How many front stuffers do you own, if you don't mind me asking?

Perhaps you could ask your brother about making a snap match and his thoughts?

I was thinking about that too, Ash.

I only have 6 & one made by he and I, a joint project the 14 bore rifle. He did all the basic shaping, inlays and most of the sanding while I finished it. Taylor has quite a few more.

I just sold my .40 to a fellow who needed an "up to .40" for the squirrel rifle shoot. Now I have to compete against it and it has a high priced match barrel on it. LOL - story of my life. Get something shooting perfectly, then sell it to the competition & tell him what loads to use so he can beat me.
This is my favourite.

Gorgeous!
Ain't that always the case when you get something shooting well? (Not for me, but I've heard heaps of similar stories haha).

I saw a 28 smooth bore under a .38 rifled muzzle loader. Be a dandy of a small game gun.

I think Jess Melot at The Rifle Shoppe has matchlocks of various flavors.

Glad you found a lock. Much cheaper than having someone build one for you, from scratch.

Here's an A. Verner rifle Taylor built a few years ago. Particularly nice and a 44" or maybe 46" bl.

]

Gun Smitk is how A. Vernver signed the rifle that Taylor followed when building this one. Presumably K is how he made his h's - or it was a screwup, no one (that I know) knows.

Such talent. I love how people are still building high end (looks it to me!) muzzleloaders, and that there is still a market for them

I've only ever shot them at targets, but i'd love to hunt with a muzzle loader.

I think i'll find a cheap .50 and have a go

Ash - for a "cheap" ML, there are no better than the Lyman GPR. The(Great Plains Rifle) has a slower, round ball twist. the GPH, Great Plains Hunter, has a faster, 28" (or 32") twist for shooting conicals.

The .54 calibre version would be the best if contemplating large game. In that, I would include Sambar and Red Deer Stags. Out to 150yards, the round ball will generally kill more quickly than a concial.
