W J Jeffery records or daybooks?
      #271827 - 18/10/15 04:26 AM

Does anyone here have info as to the current (2015) owner or whereabouts of the original W J Jeffery records?
Last I heard was they were in the possession of Thomas Friedkin down in Texas but enquiry's go unanswered.

I ask because I have a Jeffery double .577 3 1/4" BPE underlever hammer gun inbound and would dearly love to know its details.

And yes, once it gets into my hands I will post pictures, etc.

Cal Pappas should be able to get you details to access records. He went through them in his research for his .600 book.

pappas@mtaonline.net

Last I heard was Thomas Friedkin still owns W J Jeffery and they are at a ranch in Texas. He lives in Colorado.

Cheers,

Chris

Chris,
Thanks for this, I have just finished a phone conversation with Cal thanks to your email point out.

He did help me narrow down the possibilities, and his records for his Jeffery 8 bore date my incoming .577 BPE to "pre 1896".

The actual present owner of the records is still obscure.....

j roberts gunmakers http://www.jroberts-gunmakers.co.uk/about.php - used to have them and are now their agents. I have a 1920's 410 Wj Jeffery and they were very helpful in giving me it's history - but that was five plus years ago.

Many thanks for the thought. Seemingly Roberts is not able to help any longer.
I am still trying to get a response from the principals who supposedly hold the Jeffery records; now have a line on another name associated with Mr. Friedkin and the current W J Jeffery business based in Boulder, Colorado. We shall see.
It is unfortunate that these records are so closely held and difficult to access.

Finally took delivery of the .577 last week and it is a beauty, nice solid working rifle in little used condition. Barrels reblacked as one might expect, with an updated Silvers type recoil pad. Case colors are faded but about 70-80% outside and very bright on the inside and protected areas. Checkering has not been messed with.
Best estimate now is it was made in 1894. Will post a couple of pictures and better description when I'm back in the country after work.

Love it! Agree it is probably later, as you say, with the lower hammers and fences

The lovely engraving is a bonus, nicely "in the white"

My plain Hollis .577 3" has 26 3/4" barrels for a similar weight

Plus one for the congratulations and good shooting

Tony

The Jeffery records are owned by a man named Friedkin. He owns Gulf States Toyota. He lives in Houston. When they get enough requests they send a secretary familiar with the process out to his ranch where the records are kept. And that is how the magic works!

Christmas in February! [Re: bwanabobftw]

Thanks to the very kind efforts of (Mark) Mr. Pugwash, Mr. Charles Williams, and Mr. Richard Newgass I have been sent a copy of the W J Jeffery daybook page for my Jeffery .577BPE #2457
Interesting in that it does confirm that it is in fact original in .577 3 1/4" BPE, 6 1/2 Dram 650 grain bullet. Made by "Ellis" (Richard Ellis?) for Jeffery and completed on 20Feb1896
Note that "Ellis" is the principal maker for all the guns and rifles at this time block.

3DogMike,

Love the double and accompanying paperwork!

As an FYI, I researched the Freud quote tagged at the bottom of you posts, because it sounded almost too good to be true... Alas, from what I could find, it's a bogus quote that he never said.

Christopher.......thanks for the correction, too bad because it's a great observation, I wish I'd made that quote.
I changed attribution to "Anonynous"
