Hey there:

I'm in Canada and find myself coming back to this sight again and again for classic rifle research.

I found this M-88 sporter done by V. Chr. Schilling, Suhl a few months ago. When I bought it, someone had broken and repaired the stock using body filler, brown paint, and birch...which is unacceptable completely. The front action screw and escutcheon are also missing.

It's a neat little rifle, and the metal is in great shape with a bright bore and the numbers all match. I faux-repaired the birch patch by cutting it out and fitting in a walnut piece, mostly to provide a base to build up the stock with bondo before using it as a copying blank. But before I do that, is there anyone in the world with parts for these old rifles, or is it all a from scratch thing?

Hello

you are in the wrong forum but we are tolerant, the M 88 rifle belongs into the Mannlicher Forum.
the front action screw must be the same as used in military rifles just with a decent engraving original. anyway, just take a military rifle screw.
if you cant find it in canada I know this firm ship worldwide and they speaking english.

Thanks, and sorry -- I thought this was an early Mauser and that Mannlicher came later.

well, its an old question with M 88 commission rifles...
the bolt action is in fact a modified Mauser 71 action but the Mannlicher Patent magazine makes it a Mannlicher too.
The Mannlicher Schönauer is so not a Mannlicher because this rifle combine a modified M 88 action with the Schönauer magazine. I think there is not a single design element that comes from the hands of Mannlicher in this rifle but it was made in the Steyr Factory.
Good part of M 88 rifles were made also in Steyr for using the Mannlicher magazine patent hold by the Steyr factory than.
