G'Day Fella's,

Thank You Gert, but myself like most others, seem to use .44 Caliber Gas Checks for cast bullets in their .404 Jeff's.
I have a life time supply of these at present but others may be interested?

Hope that helps

Regards
Homer

Thank you for the feedback, yes Homer, you are correct, the .44 caliber work,it is .429" and will be swag to fit your .423" gas check..it will be great if you can fill me in with details of the process you use to get a good fit of the .44 magnum gas checks you use for the .423" cast bullets.

I received an answer from the gas check company, I really think this is excellent service from this company.

"
Gert,

With those dimensions the people in our shop are saying that a 44 Caliber Gas Check should work. We can adjust the thickness of the raw material to provide several different shank diameters. If you want to try it out and let me know which work best we are more than willing to send you some sample checks. You would just have to cover the shipping cost for the sample checks. Just need to get a country and postal code from you to calculate shipping."

The 44 cal copper gas checks are an easy fit on cast bullets for the 404, no real need for custom gas checks.

For some stupid reason that has always escaped me, I had a bullet mould made by Richard Hoch 36 years ago to cast a plain base 400gr bullet for my 404 (the stupid part being the plain base, the Hoch mould itself is a work of art) but I have devised a simple method of quickly turning a shoulder on the bullet base to take a 44 cal gas check and the bullets size perfectly in my Lyman 450 lube/sizer.

The photo below shows my own cast bullet on the right and another NE members 404 bullet on the left, both with standard 44 cal gas checks sized in place.

Thank you kindly Eagle 27 this info is appreciated. Since I do not have .44 magnum gas checks I still need to get hold of gas checks for my 404 Jeffery cast bullets, that is why I am going this route, to purchase from Vulcan Checks..it is always good to start a business relationship with a company who sell items I usually are in need of...

Hallo Caprivi
With our Rand currency at an all time low for the past fourteen years...it will be a long time into the future before I will be able to purchase an item like this..it will be just to expensive to purchase a freechex...

Thanks Gert,
yes I use .44 Caliber Gas Checks myself for cast bullets in my .404.
I have sufficient at present, definitely not have a lifetime supply of these like Homer as we don't get paid all that well in the Electrical Industry!
I can't remember the actual make of mine but got my .44 GC's off Cast Bullet Engineering here in Oz.
They were rather hard & didn't size too well at all until I got a mate's missus who has a kiln to anneal them (packed them in mint tins) - much better after that!
It seems silly that GC's aren't made for the .404, but considering the numbers of .44's out there & the closeness in size you can understand why they don't.
Guess it takes someone like you to get pissed off enough to get off their backside to actually do something about it - best of luck there mate!
Keep us all informed here mate as this is really the central hub for this side of things!
There certainly will be someone interested soon enough.
Hope that helps

Good day to you 93x64, I believe all is well and good on your side? I did make my own gas check die set/punch..the difficulty is that I do not always get the correct thickness copper sheet to get a good quality gas check.. I therefore wanted to purchase a lot of 404 Jeffery gas checks since I am sure there will be hunters who have a need for a cheaper option to shoot this caliber rifle more frequently..to be able to do that I need to use cast bullets cast by myself...it enables me to shoot the 404 Jeffery more frequently...off the shelve ammo is just too expensive...
John Overacker send my gas checks this morning from New York ....this is what I call excellent service..

I am uploading an e-mail to this company if somebody is in need of gas checks...

You seem to have your 404 gas check supply sorted although aluminium also makes good gas checks and is likely easier to get in a range of thicknesses than copper. I imagine it is also softer so easier to use to make checks using the die and punch sets. I have used aluminium checks on my 404 cast bullets and notice no difference in performance between them and copper.

Von Gruff has supplied me with his cast bullets and aluminium checks, one of his bullets with his own made aluminium checks in place below.

From my experience I have found the aluminium checks I make are as good and sometimes better than the copper (factory) checks up to about 1900fps. As has been said the 44 mag checks work for the 404 but I had a second stem made with a smaller nose for the 424 bullet and it has proved to be a cheap way to "double up" on the freechex checkmaker. In the same way my 7mm maker also makes checks for my 6.5 with a smaller nosed stem and again for the 303 maker that will also make them for the 30 cal. Having 3 freechex tools I can now make checks for 6 cartridges.
This is the 44 mag freechex tool with the 44 cal stem havinng the case on top and the smaller nosed stem for the 424 bullet
