Parker Hale to 404 Jeffery?
      #269860 - 01/09/15 02:15 PM

One day I would like a 404 Jeffery. There is a Parker Hale action going cheaply, it use to be a 308 Norma Magnum and the action has been parkerised. It has a new Timney trigger and doesn't look like it has a safety.
Anything to look out for?

The Parker Hale action is a Spanish made copy of a Mauser 98. They were a well made strong action. Apart from producing rifles using this action for most of the common hunting cartridges, Parker Hale also made rifles for the 404 Jeffery cartridge and even had Norma make up their own Parker Hale branded 404 ammunition some of which I still have.

Stug,
Like Eagle27 said, PH made a 404 on their actions, they were workhorses from memory.
Would have to trim about 5mm off the back of the magazine as the 404 needs about 90mm clearance, my PH's have about the 85-86mm length magazines.
A bit of work to do, best to discuss with a gunsmith first as to cost - but are good actions to base projects on.
Cheers

stug, I just heard that the one I built on a 50's FN Colombian is going to be sold on. The guy has killed a few feral cattle and pigs but dosent use it enough and has also been doing more long rage sniping than close up hunting. Let me know if you are interested and I can pass on his details.

The Model 81 Parker Hale, I believe it was called, was made in .375 H&H, .404 and .458 Win Mag.

G'Day Fella's,

Stug, a bloke I new used to have a factory P/Hale in .404 Jeffery.
It was a nice looking rifle, with plain straight grained (read Strong) stock with a Schnabel forend!

Also, you have a couple of great .404 men there (in, Von Gruff and Eagle27), in NZ to assist and advise you on this caliber!!!

Hope that helps

Thanks for all the advice guys. Things have turned a very nice corner and I will soon have VonGruff's old .404 Jeff in my hands so no need for the PH action.

What was von gruff's .404? If it is a classic rifle, you have a gem. If not, I am sure it will do the job. Has he posted photos of it before ... I forget if he has.

A link to it? Otherwise please post some.

Stug, who made the rear sight? Any chance of a pic or two of it? It looks like what I'm wanting for one of my current projects.

thanks,
Jim
