Another BREVEX Magnum Mauser - 460 Wby Mag - Unknown Maker

Hello Folks,

Well, another Rare BREVEX Magnum Mauser has just been added to my collection. Fortunately for me, the seller did not know what he had. He listed it as "Unknown" Magnum Mauser. Here was the listing.

There were a couple of things that hinted that this was an Original Brevex Action.



And it turns out it was. Here are the specs.

Brevex Mauser Magnum Action - M.300 #381 - w/ "BV" stamp
460 Weatherby Magnum caliber (3+1)
24" Barrel (maker unknown)
Magna-ported w/ Muzzle Brake
2nd forward recoil lug - bottom of the barrel
2-position Swing Safety
Sako adjustable Trigger
11 lbs 2 oz
13-1/4" LOP
1/4 matted Rib w/ Express Sight - 1 standing 2 folding
1-1/4x4 Swarovski Dangerous Game Scope
Claw Mounts


The Stock work is very professional with nice hand checkering. The work looks to be late 50's or early 60's vintage. Unfortunately the action is entirely glass bedded (Micro Bed) so there is no sign of a maker's stamp to be seen. I know that some of the first 378 & 460 Wby Mag rifles built by Roy Weatherby, were built on Brevex actions. I'll continue researching and perhaps will discover who built this unique piece.

I'm thinking I might get rid of the "soup strainer" on the front - here is what it would look like without it. I think it looks a lot better.

Helmut,

That stock pattern looks a lot like the old Reinhart Fajan "Marksman" stock. Fajan furnished fully finished stocks and it wouldn't surprise me if your stock were one. I have several which I bought back in the '60's and the workmanship is nothing to sneer at. Is the fore end tip on your rifle plastic, rather than horn?

It looks like a pretty comfortable stock to shoot.

Thanks for the reply.

The forend tip is rosewood. And yes, the grip cap is typical "stamp-checkered" with a single attaching screw, like those on Fajen stocks. However, the checkering is lightning pattern "borderless", with a wrap-around pattern on the forend. Most Fajen stocks I've seen had checkering with borders, and 2-panels on the forend. Also, the recoil pad is Pachmayr.

It would be interesting to find a 1960's Fajen catalog to see what options were available.

Some one was afraid of that beast.

Mag sporting and muzzle break! I wonder does it reduce the recoil or that of a 243?

Thanks for the reply.

I shot the rifle a couple of dozen times today, and the recoil reduction system seems to work. The rifle barked with a violent "Twitch" rather than a sharp recoil. Recoil was more like a 375 H&H. Too bad the soup-strainer is so ugly, but it really works.
