Winchester 1895 Flatside

Here is a Winchester 1895 Flatside in 38-72 ca. 1896.
The rifles from the first couple years of manufacture had flat sides rather than the more common scalloped sides. I suppose it had something to do with the loading of smokeless cartridges and that Winchester could use the same action for all 1895s all the way up to the 405.

It is in what I call undisturbed condition, turning a nice brown, almost olive color.
A really honest example of an early 1895.

Very nice rifle. Is it one of yours? A new addition maybe?
Many years ago I had an 1886 in 45/90. The cresent butt plate was a killer! I much prefer a flat shotgun butt to distribute the recoil across a larger area.

Yep, it's mine.
I always thought the flatside '95s were cool but never bought one, all the while, good ones ever increasing in value.
Still cheap compared to English sporting rifles and now that I have it, I am not disappointed.

I have my eye on two 1895s in Quebec Canada. The potential seller is 82 and just starting to sell off his collection.

Both are 303s one a rifle and the other a carbine. The carbine is pristine almost 100%. The rifle was used as a target rifle in the 50/60s and has a target sight and the trigger was modified to under 1 lbs. it will slam fire!

I always wanted a 405 but I have put offers in on these two. The carbine I certainly want but the rifle ... Is a modified rifle with a well used bore (corrosive ammo) actually worth anything?

Nice rifle, Huvius!

I have a couple of Winchester lever action rifles: a Mod. 1892 in .32/20 made in 1902, and a Mod. 71 Deluxe (.348 Win. of course) made in 1946.

I enjoy both. Never have owned a Mod. 1895.

What a sweet old girl. I am not familiar with the 38/72 WCF but it should be the bee's knees on deer and pigs.
