Gentlemen, I am considering buying a Sabatti Classic 92 SxS double rifle in 9.3x74R with ejectors and double triggers. Good or bad choice ?

I have a 45-70 92 basic and I have to admit that I am impressed.
Triggers could be better but the regulation is excellent. Only other improvements that I would make are new sights like a single standing rear an have someone put proper scope mounts on it. LOP is also too long for me at 15"
Nice well built rifle.

The Sabatti get VERY mixed reviews. Some are terrible and some are fine. I would only buy one that I had shot personally and was happy with the results.

Waidmannsheil:
I think if you do a search on this site you will find a lot of discussion on the Sabatti, as stug said quite a lot of mixed reviews. I've had two, my first was a disaster, the second I couldn't be happier with.

Aromakr, I had a look on the forum and as you said there are a lot of mixed reviews. I mainly wanted to find out from people who might have bought a new rifle recently, which will have been some time since the dremel muzzle grinding saga. I wanted to see if there have been any new or additional problems since then. Thanks again.

G'day,

I am new to the forum but I do have a Sabatti (please be gentle I bruise easily).

I bought the 45-70 Sabatti a few months ago after selling my Baikal (also 45-70).

The difference is chalk and cheese (as you would hope with the price difference).

I am over the moon with my Sabbati.

I am currently playing around with loads to find the one I will take to my gun smith to regulate.

I am currently leaning towards the 405Gr cast rounds with 38gr of AR2207 (about 1800fps). These are comfortable to fire and should put down anything I will walk across in NSW.

I am also working with a 535Gr cast round and may try boosting the 405 to approx 2000fps (slowly) and see how happy I am to fire those.

I love the look and feel of the Sabatti (admittedly I had a low base to compare from). At this stage I am still having fun playing around with loads and sights (I have a SightMark reflex sight on at the moment) and once I am happy with it I will go out and see if I can knock over a pig or two.

Tony:
I would suggest you try to find a load that will regulate with that rifle. The sabbati's are not that easy to regulate, they don't have the wedge that allows for regulation. Mine was regulated with Hornady spire point bullets and printed one about 3" above the first shot. I found by going to a round nose bullet the regulation changed to side by side. So unless it way out, try changing with load and bullet changes,
Bob

Bob,

When I saw this video (see below) I was hoping it applied to all their doubles. Is it only their bigger calibres that have the wedge?

Mine has two different types of metal at the muzzle and I thought the harder looking piece in the middle was a wedge?

If I can sort myself out I will post a photo.

I stand corrected, I looked at mine again and there is a wedge in it.

Bob,

No worries.

I tried a few loads last week and was comfortable with a 535Gr cast bullet behind 36gr of ADI 2207. Is there a way of working out the velocity of a load with out a crono?

My next project is to see if a 2000fps 405Gr cast bullet is comfortable to shoot and then I will go firm on a round to synch the gun with.

I think playing around with loads is sometimes half the fun with the double rifle?

Tony:
Please don't take offense at this, but I am wondering how you could possibly shoot that thing with such a high sight. Those sights are fine on handguns, where you just hold the pistol a bit lower, but in a double rifle where stock fit is critical to quick shooting and fast second-barrel shots, I think you may be doing yourself a great disservice.

Chuck that thing away and rejoice in the open sights. Widen the rear vee if necessary (we had to on ours) and fit the correct size sight bead for your eyes, and you will never look back!

BTW some of these rifles had brazed wedges and have to be re-regulated by lifting the ribs and altering the packing, rather than just moving the wedge. Ours did!

Waidmannsheil:
I too think these Sabatti doubles are marvelous things for the money, and even if you factor in the cost of re-regulation you get a pretty good double rifle sighted for your own favorite load at a ridiculously low price! All good!

No offence taken.

I have to admit I feel a little dirty every time I use it

I have used the open sights and they did shoot surprising well, BUT, it really does shoot so well with the reflex sight. I don't know if I got lucky but the reticule is very low in the window and I don't have any trouble shooting with it.

So far as regulating- The below is 4 shots at 50m, resting on a sandbag. I think this will do me.

I was firing HRBC 300gr cast bullets with 43gr of ADI 2207 (approx 1950fps).

Can't argue with results!

Any plans to take it into the hunting field soon?
That cast bullet load should do the job on pigs all right.
Look forward to the photos!
