Serious question
      #269366 - 18/08/15 08:18 AM

Were gorillas ever hunted as trophies? Are they still? If not, why?

Thanks

I have read of safaris where gorilla was on the trophy lists to be taken. I can't remember which the books or references were.

Why they aren't hunted today?

I don't know their CITES classification but I would guess they would be classified as endangered and not able to be legally hunted.

Watch an old movie called Mogambo and you'll understand why...

Granted, Ava Gardner might be a bit of a distraction but still...

I think there is a book titles "Gorilla Safari" as well. Someone's story of a hunting safari after the gorilla.

They are seriously endangered.

Besides, contrary to the chimps who are nasty bastards, gorillas are gentle animals, and once you make eye contact with some of them (many families have been habituated to have humans in close presence, and you can visit them with special permits and guides) you won't be in the mood to shoot any gorilla unless in a situation of self-defence - which is extremely rare, as they tend to mind their own business. Most of the surviving ones live in protected areas, so one wouldn't have any business getting close to a big pissed-off Alpha-male anyway...

Gorilla hand ashtrays?
James Mellon shot some ,It's been a long time since I read his book.
Bror Blixen might have shot some as well ,more of a lark than a money maker.
I've purchased but not yet read Monte Reel's book Between Man and Beast.
Apparently it's about Victorian explorers, gorillas and evolution debates .

most times but not allways so be careful

think most times they were shot for crop protection, it was another time and they wee not rare like this chipanzee in my neighborhood coming from Togo.

Think the Orang Utang was a little bit different, this was a common souvenier from dutch east india but I never heard that they made damage. it was just a way for the locals to make money.
there was an old Capitain and sea dog in my neighborhood too, now for many years six feet under, the lord may bless him.
was a man who startet on sailing ships in the 1920s. he was telling they had a orang utang on board for a long time as some kind of mascot. was a good boy but need to have his beer every day.
