Kimber Talkeetna vs Sako Kodiak 375 H&H Velocity Comparison
      #268353 - 23/07/15 12:53 AM

I recently posted, asking about the velocity loss going from a 24" barrel, down to a Sako Kodiak with a 21.3" barrel. Well, in the name of research, I went out and bought a Kimber Talkeetna with a 24" barrel in order to do some testing myself.(Who am I fooling? I just wanted a new rifle).
I have began shooting both rifles across the cronograph with various loads. So far, I am getting between 75-100 fps difference between the two rifles. With the advantage, of course going to the Kimber. This is all with 300 gr bullets. Both factory and hand loads.
I am getting around 2520 with handloads from the Kimber and 2425 with the shorter Sako.
I tested some old PMC 300gr x bullet factory loads as well. They are running 2420 in the Kimber and 2350 from the Sako.
I will continue testing with other powders and bullet weights.

Stay tuned.

G'Day Fella's,

Toby 458, Thank You for the comparison on these different barrel lengths!
What do you think of the Kimber?
I'm thinking of getting a Caprivi in .375 H&H!

I like it so far. I haven't really shot it for accuracy yet. It's been 95 here, most days, so I haven't wanted to be outside that much. It does feed and function well though. And the stock really handles recoil well.
I owned a Caprivi for awhile myself. Beautiful gun! In fact, I sold it because it was a little too nice for my needs. It is also slightly heavy for a 375. But if it fits your needs, I would say go for it. They are very well made.

G'Day Fella's,

Toby 458, thank you for that information!
I already have a couple of other Kimber firearms, and I'm very happy with those, so nice to have your confirmation on the .375!

Here's my first kill with the new Sako Kodiak 375. Not much of a match, but it's good practice.

Homer
I have a very good friend who has the Kimber in .375--has taken it to Africa on numerous occassions..he really likes the rifle..for whatever its worth..I have shot it working up loads for him..mild kicking rifle..bit thicker in the fore end than I care for .but all in all, a nice rifle

Good thread. The velocities are quite interesting. A couple years ago, I built some loads for a chap with a 25" bl. .375 BRNO ZKK 602. He found an old box of 300gr. Silvertip WW ammo which we ran over the screens.
They averaged 2,474fps.

In every load that I've tested so far, the shorter barrel loses around 75fps. So, basically the longer barrel has approximately a 40yd advantage. I've decided to do a water buffalo hunt this December in the NT, so I'll let you know how the shorter rifle performs on really big game.

Curious to see your results as well. Thank you for posting this.

IMHO, as most shots with a 375H&H will normally be of relatively shorter distance, the 75fps should be of little consequence, no???

That is my thought as well Ripp. I would imagine 100 yards is a long shot on most of what the 375 would be used on. If a longer shot, say over 250 yards is called for on smaller game, a good 250 grain Barnes ttsx should flatten everything out nicely. Of course, the longer barrel would still have the advantage, but probably only by an inch or two, as far as bullet drop is concerned.
