Replacing a worn out barrel??

Having acquired my MSch M 1903 Takedown, a rifle in pretty nice condition considering it's 1922 build heritage, I've been chasing around to find the right scope mount system. This done and while thoroughly investigating the rifle and it's condition, I now realise I need to re-barrel it.

I feel I should do this as a priority before I go any further. Now, I believe I know where there are some new 6.5x54MSch barrels...been sitting around for quite some time though, so condition has to be checked.
But, should I opt for the same cartridge/calibre or change to say..6.5x55 SE or 7x57/.275 Rigby?

I'm inclined to go for exactly the same as original...what do you other guys think please?

If it fits/works with the original magazine I'd go with what I wanted. Trying to change the mag to work with another cartridge isn't easy/cheap.

Mannlicher Schönauer magazines are specially caliber-fitted and re-fitting for another caliber is not so easy work to do. IMO Mannlicher Schönauer m1903 with other caliber than 6,5x54 MS isn't M1903 anymore.

Before you think about replacing that barrel shoot it first, you may be surprised. I have a Dutch 303 by Watson Bros that shoots 2-3" at 100 yds thru a barrel that makes a sewer pipe look good.

I think you can find these ring sizes friom both EAW & Recknagel in Germany. I understand they have a full range of sizes at 1mm interval.

I shall hopefully shoot the rifle on Saturday for the first time. Also before I do I will be able to look at the bore through a bore scope. I hope I'm wrong about the barrel, but I'm rather hoping for much closer than 2-3" ' 100yds. If not possible, then I will re-barrel...fortunately, today I have found an unused 6.5x54 MSch. barrel that has been in stock for more than 30 years...it's gathered quite a lot of dust, but I've been told it's well greased and should be like new!
Now that is a find & I've got my name on the barrel...again, I'll see it this Saturday.
I'll bet there aren't many of those knocking around either.

Well I shot the rifle for the first time yesterday & using RWS 159gn soft point bullets, both using the peep sight and the 'iron' sights, the result was very encouraging.
Looked via a bore scope down the barrel and the rifling seemed not too bad. Certainly no copper in there, so the first group at 100yds around 1.25" MOA was quite good. The second was similar and put the two 3 shot groups into the same 1.25" MOA slot....that was using the peep sight.

Probably due to my eyes not as young as they were, the result using the rear iron sight was much more 'open' anyway, I think no new barrel just yet, but I will pay for the one I've found & keep it put by.

However...a problem occurred. Although the bolt action is as slick as it should be. The feed of rounds from the rotary mag into the breech is very poor and certainly not smooth, requiring some force and visibly incorrect presentation of the round to the chamber. Once aligned correctly the rounds chamber smoothly. The alignment seems wrong though and I just cannot see what the problem is...other than perhaps the cartridge lock plate on the right of the breech (spring loaded for releasing cartridges from the magazine) being a restricting factor...but I don't know as it doesn't seem to have been interfered with.

Thoughts from anyone?

Your mention of a "peep" sight intrigues me. Are you referring to a receiver sight or to a cocking piece sight? If the former, is it a Lyman 36? They are quite rare and expensive in these parts.

Carefully watch as you are trying to feed a cartridge from the magazine and look to see if the case rim is coming up smoothly behind the extractor claw and the case head onto the bolt face. Your rifle may have had the extractor replaced but not fitted up properly.

A careful stoning of the bottom toe of the extractor on my Mauser 404 had the cartridges feeding like a hot knife through butter whereas before they were a pig to fed from the magazine and the cases were scratched to hell.

xausa - The peepsight is the original factory fitted MSch as pictured.



Eagle27 - the full story of the rotary mag feed problem is on another thread...and is now fixed.

I knew a person that spent 18 years in the German firearms trade before coming back to the states. He explained to me that the peep sight is to be used in conjunction with the front and rear irons sights. Using the peep sight helps sharpen the focus on the iron sights. If you ever did any competitive rifle shooting then you may be familiar with the peep sight oculars that are affixed to glasses for the same purpose, or the poor mans version, a piece of electrical tape with a small hole punched in it applied to the lens of a persons glasses. See attachment for two versions of the glasses version.

Thanks for that input Vlad, I've used the peepsight just to fire the rifle, but will probably never use it again as the rifle will be scoped very soon.
I intend to use it hunting and hoped to be on the stags with it before 21st October...may not make that date though, so I reckon the first beastie to be taken with it is likely to be a hind before the end of the year.
