50 in August and the Top End
      #268408 - 23/07/15 03:09 PM

At the beginning of August I will be celebrating my Fiftieth Birthday and then shortly after a drive to Darwin and Katherine and some hunting with one of our great NE members up there, Claydog. Our good friend larcher is coming out too, so all three of us are looking forward to it.

I enjoy the outback drive and the deserts especially at dusk or early mornings, but a four day or so solo drive, not so much. Usually I find it less a chore than the thought of it beforehand. One just needs to know how to amuse oneself.

Things are coming together at the last moment this time for this trip. I may even have my rifles back from the gunsmith in time ... which I have been panicing about privately ...
The vehicle is still dinged up but three or four trips to mechanics and it may be reliable!!! Long story as to why three to four trips to the mechanics for that ....

Am planning to start packing well before, not my usual last minute rush ...

Looking forward to a few days with friends in the bush. And also meeting up with some of the good NT guys while up there.

Got a quick question for some of our NT and Darwin guys. Can you recommend a nice hotel or motel at Darwin?

I will stay one night before JB/larcher arrives, and then a few nights possibly later, one or off. A place with a nice pool, good parking and nice accomodation. Preferably with a decent inhouse restaurant as well.

I think one place on the coast somewhere sounded nice but I have never seen it or remember its name or where it was ...

I have stayed in three different hotels or cottages in Darwin in the past, one in the CBD which is nice but way too expensive, a boring hotel, and a motel out in the sticks somewhere, when at the BGRC National shoot. None of them really interests me.

So any suggestions?

I have a feeling the Darwin Cup might be a similar time to when I will be there again, and for once think a booking might be a good idea.

Thanks.

(PS of course will have camping gear and tent with anyway, for the bush, and as needed on the way up and back and wherever else is necessary)

Have a good one John, bet Larcher runs amok & leads you both astray!
Best thing to do on your 50th - what you want to do for a change.
Safe travels mate & to plenty of game in your sights
Cheers

Sounds like a good road trip leading to a great hunting trip. Hope it goes well and you have an excellent time.

Remember, It's all about the journey and not the destination.

Have a Happy 50th Birthday, one needs to do something special and memorable for such a milestone event. I went to Tanzania for 3 months for mine (without the family) and had a fabulous time.

Cheers

David.

P.S. Don't for get to do a hunt report for Nitro Express and say g'day to Larcher for us.

larcher said "Make sure there is a mademoiselle for each of us!"

So now the drive up for four days is definitely not going to be lonely. Whoppee!!!

A safari is a journey ... in this case it begins with a solid 35 hours and a bit over 3,000 kilometres ...

Congratulations on making the half century! Did it myself years ago. Can't even remember it, to busy working on the next 50.

Good luck on the hunt!

Tell Larcher to bring the 10.75x68 over and give it a run for me, then leave it here

Actually, does anyone know the laws on that? Because he's currently holding one in France for me.

Congrats on the big 50, John. Shame you're not making a huge detour to the East Coast!

Same as any importation. Importation paperwork needs to be done WELL in advance. Once in the country delivered to a gun dealer is the usual route while PTA's are organised and also for any waiting period.

Home again as of 11 pm or so last night. A drive from Cooper Pedy to the Barossa for the last leg of the trip.

A successful trip in almost every way. A good hunt with JB. A hunt by myself later. Meeting friends, new and old. Recharged the batteries away from home.

Will start posting some photos and stories soon. Got a different hunt to post photos of first though.
