I've finally been able to shoot my 12 bore rifle.

I had my single shot 12 bore Jeffery rebarreled with a new rifle barrel. The old shotgun barrel would not pass proof and had a hole ground into it so that it could be auctioned legally in England as a "stock and action only". I paid 45 pounds for it. Bought a new hastings shotgun barrel and had it monoblocked, (sleeved), into the action and sights put on. It weighs 5lbs 8ozs. And considering the action, will be for lower pressure loads only. Chambered for 2 3/4". Should be a handy little rifle up here. I loaded up some rounds a few days ago with different bullets. The best was this one weighing at 816 grs but it shot from 725 up to the 816 almost the same. Target was at 40 yds standing offhand. I could barely see the front sight. I need to do something about that. 4.25" spread. I've now named the rifle. "Mule" as it kicks like one.

That is light - and will boot, as you say.

Recoil is why I named my 14 bore "Bitch" in 1986 - and it's 9 1/2 pounds. I cannot imagine shooting a slug or round ball in a 5 1/2 pound gun. At least with smokless powder, the recoil will be less than the equvilent load in black.

I't stout but not terrible. I shot 9 rounds without a bruise in just a t shirt.

Funny--I named my 11-bore SxS after my ex-wife for much the same reason. If I had Casper50's little rifle, I'd have to name it "Vic" after a gal I dated for a while.

I'm curious about the barrel as received from the auction. At what point was the hole ground in the barrel--in the chamber area, or further out, where it would be cut off when the barrel was sleeved? I heard rumors of a similar rifle floating around, and have thought about trying to locate it but have hesitated because I wasn't sure if this would be a problem.

Casper - 45 pounds for the stocked action would have driven it's aristocratic maker into fits.

That was a steal (note spelling) all out of proportion to any reason of any sort. I guess there isn't a lot of re-barreling done, in the UK or Europe? Imagine - that action, lock, stock and monoblock for 45 pounds - what's that 65 to 70$$. YIKES!

A not to be named person once showed me several lovely shotguns he had purchased from a London auction house. As the chambers or bores were not to modern specification, the auction house cut or drilled holes into the barrels so the guns could not be fired.

If I remember rightly, were as cheap as 10 pounds in cost ...

Many had lovely engraving too ...

I've bought many for that or less. They grind the barrel about under the forearm now towards the front end. Some people want them for wall hangers so it's hidden that way. I sold another 12 bore and a 28 bore Holland & Holland a few months ago. They're pretty easy to find.

There is a very similar one for sale in Australia at the moment although it has a top lever spindle, not an under-lever.

A pistol grip would be preferred. My thumb hits my nose during recoil if I don't move it a little bit forward. $650 is a bit steep for the condition I'd think.

I have an itch to build one of these myself but on a hammerless single barrel trap gun.
I got ahold of a Francotte 12b trap gun a few months ago for pretty cheap and after a couple other projects are done, think it may be the next one in line.

I agree, it is far to much, but then that is typical of our Australian brothers,greedy and patient.

Seems to be some knowledgeable people on this thread.

Even though it is about a year old, I'll ask my question.

What action should I be looking for to build/rebarrel to 12 bore? I have the barrel blank. Was kinda' one of those "Can't pass it up deals" but what to use for the rest, I'm clueless. Will one of the .303 Martini/Greener actions work? Do I need to find something more robust?
