Is there a DR for idiots?
      #26871 - 26/02/05 06:52 AM

Is there a DR book out there that begins at the begining and ends with current DRs? The more I read in this forum the less I feel I know. I'd like a DR for idiots type book. Any suggestions?

If you were to get a new DR chambered in the ubiques .375 H&H, .416 Rigby, or .470 NE - then you'd have an idiot proof gun, as they are all now regulated with Federal Ammo which is about as easy to get as candy. Stick the bullet in and shoot.

Thanks for the advice, but what I'm looking for is a book(s) that really imparts all/most DR knowledge. I'd like to really understand what I'm looking at before I drop 20k or so on a DR.

Try

A Sqaure - Any Shot you want A great book on Rifle, DG Rifles, Reloading, Big Game cartridges

Robertson - The Perfect Shot

Taylor's book - African Rifles and Cartridges

Any of the old books on African hunting where they decribe the hunting and rifle.

I have looked at some of Elmer Keith's stuff and found it quite good.

I have found reading to be one of the best ways of gaining knowledge.

Hope this helps.

One book for everything? Greame Wright Shooting the British Double Rifle. It gives you EVERYTHING including stuff a bunch of the usual suspects here don't even know.

The single best book for double rifles is G. Wright's "Shooting the British DOuble Rifle". Great book for how they work, and getting old British rifles to shoot. The only "draw back" is that there is nothing on "modern doubles" whether Searcy or European.

Grey's book "The Hammerless Double Rifle" is good eye candy, with a good deal on double rifle construction, but it has some limits, and can be hard to find.

Boddington's "Safari Rifles," Woods, "Rifles for Africa", and of course Taylor's books have some info.

Try to look up back issues of Double Gun Journal with articles by Ross Seyfried and Sherman Bell, they have some useful stuff, with fun pictures

I think the Sig S2 Blaser double rifle is perfect for idiots.

It has a piece of rubber between the barrels instead of a soldered rib for God's sake!

Not my cup of tea...

500 Grains, you have missed the best point making the S2 an idiot gun. It is a hammerless gun which must be manually cocked in order to shoot it. Such an incredible idea for a dangerous game gun!

Thank you gentle men for the advice. I think the s2 is out. I'd rather just tape my two winchester 356's together and solder a bar across the trigers and levers. Two 356's fired simultaniously should do the trick.

But seriously thanks for the book recomendations, I've started my ebay shopping already.
