Otto Bock 250-3000 Mauser Kurz
      #208513 - 18/05/12 12:24 AM

That rifle was built on an original Mauser "Kurz" action SN-94996 and proofed March 1928.
Even if it bears the signature of Otto Bock, it appears that Greif in Suhl made it for the then prestigious Berlin firm.
The K action, with spoon handle bolt lever and double set trigger, is fitted with a superb Böhler Antinit steel 24" slightly heavy barrel, chambered for the Europe's newly introduced 250-3000 Savage cartridge.
Initially a Zielvier 4x Zeiss was fitted in handmade inverted claw mounts before a Zielseichs 6x scope replaced it circa 1937. To ease the use of the scoped rifle, a Greener safety, on the left side, blocks the sear.
Even if the traditional Suhler engraving is not up to the overall outstanding quality of the rifle, the whole assembly is top notch.
When that rifle was completely dismantled for a full restoration, we noticed how great attention has been given to details in its making, with perfect inletting, great care in barrel fitting and outstanding hand made scope mounts.
It took a full year of spare time work to return the Otto Bock 250-3000 to its past glory and it was a challenging adventure to retain even the thinnest of all the original parts.
Happily, thank to the Antinit steel, the barrel was as new, the chamber on the tight side and with the newly overhauled great Zeiss optic and good handloads, the rifle prints now ragged holes.
…my English is not as good as that little beauty, but I hope you will find that story interesting !

Greif in Suhl mark in front of the magazine

Under front of action and barrel shank before refinishing.
Notice the Mauser SN and mark under the action front ring.
Under the barrel shank the B.U.G proofs, 6,3mm for .25cal, 48½ for case length in mm, 3/28 for proof date, WK for the barrel maker.

Mmmmm, a very beautiful rifle. It is always nice to hear the story behind a gun. Enjoy

Magnificent restoration, Joel! Thank you for sharing pictures. Knowing you, I am guessing that there may be a modern rifle based on this one's styling in the works in your shop?

Thanks again and good hunting!

Excellent, excellent clean-up and restoration. True to the original. If only other smiths had the same knowledge, skill, and appreciation for the marques.

WK is the well-known barrelmaker Wilhelm Kelber, Beiersgrund 3, Suhl. Opened his own shop in 1928. Still active 1945.

Wonderful classic and a great job, love that safety!!! Is something like that still available? As someone who shoots a lot with a handgun (IPSC) I think that would feel pretty natural

Is that bolt handle original? It certainly doesn't resemble the spoon type bolt handle on the M model Stutzen.

Is Greif ("griffon") the same as Greifelt?

Indeed you are right. "Greif" is the trademark of GREIFELT & Co in Suhl.
The bolt handle is a heavily remodeled original Mauser one, bearing all the Oberndorf proof marks and SN.
The rifle is of very high quality and it's a pleasure to shoot.
It has been sold and it's now in the hands of a top notch Mauser collector.
For info, the Greener safety is still made and available in the white from Recknagel in Germany.

Own a wonderful Kurz action 250-3000 built by holland&holland s-n 1707. If someone in Western Australia knows how to photo & post to this site it is a sight to behold. A simple & elegant pot rifle.

Love the little sweetie in WA, too. What is the length of the barrel and the weight of the rifle?

That's a doll! I played around with a friend's custom Kurz a few weeks back. They just seem to handle so much better than standard actions.
