Boars Bulls and Big Rifles
      #2679 - 08/05/03 01:23 PM

G'day Everyone
If you would like to hunt with your bolt action, double rifle, or single shot rifle a lot more often, I have guided hunts in the top end of Queensland which may be of interest.
Very good close up hunting well suited to open sights.
Lots of tusky boars so bring plenty of ammo!

This sounds really interesting, I look forward to further info, as I am planning a trip 'downunder' for next year, after Zimbabwe and my Ele bull hunt !

Alan

Just putting tow and two together.

Did you hunt Hog deer on ballot at Boole Poole in 1995 (I think that was the year)?

****

Any scrub bulls with those pigs up your way?

For some reason I have always wanted a mean old red bull hanging on the wall.

G'day John
Re the hoggie ballot....'twas not I, haven't had the chance to hunt a hog deer yet.
And yes I do offer scrub bull hunting. Take a look at the attachment to my email and you'll see a photo of an average Cape York red bull taken with 9.3/62.
Watch out for a posting on scrub bulls soon.
OK, what rifle do you think you'll use?
Cheers Alan

Hi there Ann
If you would like I can email some hunt details along with a few photos and of course some prices.
I have some very good areas which I keep just for bowhunting (scrub bulls and wild boar) which may be of interest also.
This is all genuine free range hunting. Once we drive out the gate at the end of airstrip, you won't see another fence for a long time. Property's in the area are very big and most don't even have fences on their boundary's.
It's over 20 miles from the airstrip just to base camp with no fences in between.
Very good hunting for boars and bulls, and also very good fishing for barramundi, saratoga and sooty grunter in two major rivers there.
And let me tell you, a couple of cold beers taste real good at the end of a big days hunting there.
One of the great things about the area where I operate, is that we can successfully hunt wild pigs right throughout the day as opposed to most other parts of OZ where for best results you need to do your serious hunting near dusk, at night, and in the early morning.
Please let me know if you would like photos/ prices etc and I will send pronto.
Alan

Alan,
Just a suggestion , but it might be a good idea to post prices and pics on the forum, that way we can all give the eyes a treat, and it will save you e-mailing the lot of us. (that's if John doesn't mind).
Cheers,
Mpofu.

Alan

I hunted at Boole Poole at the same time as a Queensland Hunting Guide and I thought his name was Alan. Can't remember the last name at the moment.

Yes please post some information on your hunting operation. Never know you might get some business!

Alan

I have been trying to make a booking or get info on booking a pig hunting property self-guided and so far have not managed to connect with the guy. But he left a mesaage about properties by said game numbers are scarce due to the drought.

So I thought I ask you - how are game numbers up your way (what region?)? Is the drought affecting them there too, or are you further North?

I would suppose there can be significant die off during a drought, plus mustering feral game or killing it would be easier as available water is scarcer and game and stock concentrated. But usually they make a strong come back with one to three years. My experience anyway.

Some on the spot intelligence appreciated. Thanks.

THE OLD PIG HAS PROVEN HIMSELF TO BE EXTREMELY RESILIENT IN DROUGHTS HERE IN OZ DUE TO HIS ABILITY TO EAT ANY BLOODY THING AND WILL THRIVE ON THE CARCASES OF THE DEAD ANIMALS ALL ROUND,NOT BEING HINDERED BY FENCES MAKES HIS LIFE MUCH EASIER AND ITS ONLY THE WATER FACTOR(AND MAN) THAT STOPS HIM AT ALL.iN DROUGHT AREAS PIGS DONT SIT AND DIE THEY FOLLOW THE WATERCOURSES UNTIL THEY REACH A SUITABLE PLACE THEN ITS BACK TO BREEDING AGAIN.i PERSONALLY DONT THINK THAT DROUGHTS HAVE MUCH IMPACT ON THE MAJORITY OF PIGS AT ALL.

John
I don't actually offer any self guided hunts but I do have an alternative.
For many years I've been doing hunts for pigs, goats, rabbits and foxes etc in Western Queensland at reduced rates if........
Hunters travel to the property in their own vehicle.
Supply their own camping gear.
Supply and cook their own meals.
I provide the hunting property, the guide, and the hunting vehicle. Charges depend on the number of hunters and days and what type of hunt they are looking for.
Regarding pigs and droughts, yes their numbers can be significantly reduced especially if the drought lasts for several years. During short term drought pigs will indeed survive by eating carcasses and travelling to better areas.
During long term, wide spread drought things are a little different. Here's why. The wild pig does very well feeding on dead animals so long as it is also eating some form of herbage. Without herbage in its diet it will gradually lose condition and if the drought lasts a long time and it is eating nothing but carcass, it will eventually die.
As you say, hunting pigs during drought conditions is usually much easier due to the fact that that both water and feed is scarse. Also with bare ground and little or no grass all animals are easier to spot over distance, and are easier to track as well. This works well for shooters and doggers wanting pigs for sale to the chillers. Trappers find it easier too as pigs will come for miles if the traps are baited correctly.
Then the property owner starts to notice the pigs more because they are easier to see and, worried by massive stock losses decides to reduce pig numbers by trapping, shooting, and baiting.
With our most recent drought, it was so wide spread that our Queensland pigs would have had to travel all the way to Tasmania to find a feed!
They'll bounce back though, they always have in the past.
Thesedays I do the serious pig hunting in Cape York in Queensland's top end because I don't have to worry about droughts up there. Pig numbers are always good if you have access to good hunting country in the top end.
I'll try and do a post soon on the big tuskers of cape york.
Cheers Alan

The Alan Moon who used to live in St George and moved to Caboolture? Made quite a few hunting videos including "The Video Shooter Vol 1" and "Sportsmans Paradise"? Same person?

Yup, I'm your huckleberry. Those videos would be 10 years old now I guess. Done quite a few more since then as well.
I know a few people up your way so now you've really got me guessing.
