6.5x68 Opinion
      #267896 - 13/07/15 05:46 AM

I have the opportunity to buy a Mannlicher Schoenauer in caliber 6.5x68 and would like the opinion of those who have hunted with it. Also after looking online factory ammo appears to be difficult to find.
Thanks

The only thing I shot with my 6.5x68 (on a rechambered ,96 Mauser) was 2 snowshoe hares, one 10 yards behind the other - 210 and 220yards - 1 shot.
My buddy, who inspired me to test one, has always had at least one 6.5x68 - He loves the round.

Most memorable moose for him, was a cow taken on a limited entry tag - 300yard shot. The bullet hit her just West of the bung hole and stopped in the hide at her brisket. 120gr. Barnes "X" - 3,350fps mv. 9" twist required. this was an earlier "X" bullet, which lost 3 of the 4 pedals, yet still made it lengthwise on the adult moose.

To say he loves the round, is an understatement.

The bullet I used, as a 129gr. Hornady, sifting along at only 3,000fps MV (29") - in deference to the older M96 action.

Keith's normal loads for those run in the 3,200fps range - 26" bl. of course.

It was a single shot only and to extract a loaded round, the bolt had to be "pulled" slightly.

This is a Model 1956 I'm looking at and I don't know the barrel length or the twist. How important is it to have a 26" barrel and 1-9 twist?

If you want top ballistics out of the round, a 9" twist will be necessary for shooting the heavier 6.5 bullets.

A 26" bl. delivers up to 100fps higher speeds than a 24" using identical bullet weights.

The 6.5x68 usually out speeds the .264 Win. Mag by a small margin, given the same length barrels. That, AND the 6.5x68 doesn't have that useless belt - equated by some to mean power - the 68mm cases and many others do it without belts.
Seems to me, most 6.5x68 magazines hold 4 rounds, not 3 like the belted magnum cases.

I was just looking at a 1958 Shooters Bible and it looks like the Mannlicher Schoenauer has a 25.5" barrel and a 11" twist.

The 11" is what my buddy got in his first one - lightwieght bullets only - however, the Barnes TSX lightest weight bullet might shoot and give the penetration needed. Normaly, the 11" twist was for the 100gr. to 112gr. I think, bullet - VERY fast.

How about factory ammo? I've been looking online and I don't see any place in the U.S. that sells it. RWS webpage shows it available but I couldn't find any dealers for RWS in the U.S.

Bagboy

As mentioned by Daryl, the 6.5x68 is an excellent high speed flat trajectory calibre that is mostly used in Europe for mountain hunting.

RWS are part of the RUAG Ammotec Group, which has a registered office in the US in Florida:

You may contact them for finding a dealer.

You may also check on their corporate website https://rws-munition.de/en for specific ballistic data about their 6.5x68 factory ammunition.

Last, a Mannlicher-Schoenauer 1958 NO model in 6x5x68 (5-round magazine) was recently sold in France by gunsmith Joel Dorleac, of which some valuable data and photos are still available at http://www.dorleac-dorleac.com/arme/mod-no-magnum/ (the link I provided might be in French, but information is also available in English on Joel's website).

RWS ammo is hard to find in US but there is always the option of handloading.

New England Custom Gun now carries RWS ammo. It's not inexpensive.

The factory 6.5x68 - 93gr. and 127gr. are NOT suitable for Elk and Moose, imho. I think a 12" twist might work with a 120gr. TSX, but not sure. It probably will not work with a 130gr. TSX or any 140gr. bullets. I firmly believe the 6.5's need a long for calibre bullet, however the new prems muddy that water - Nosler has one, the Hornady GMX and the TSX by Barnes.
I find ANY ammo at $100.00 per 20 before or after shipping as to be astronomically expensive.

The one I'm looking at is NIB with the test target and box serial numbered to the gun, made in 1958. The link was in French so I couldn't make it out and I didn't see any pictures.

The link in English is http://www.dorleac-dorleac.com/arme/mod-no-magnum/?lang=en

In case the link didn't work log into www.dorleac-dorleac.com, click on the British flag for the English menu, then 'Guns', 'Fine second-hand firearms', and finally 'Mannlicher-Schoenauer'.

RWS ammunition do not come for cheap, even in Europe, where they are available in 3 bullet weight (93gr, 106 gr & 127 gr) at prices ranging between €106 Euro (or $115 USD)and €114 Euro (or $125 USD) per 20.

Is there any way to look at pictures on that like? The one I'm looking at was made in 1958 and is an MC model.
