Not sure why this topic was moved here but rather than start a new thread...

Can anyone who is shooting one tell me if the .338/284 and 9,3x53R make Group 1 energy requirements with standard loads?

As 416SW stated those figures are the bare minimum, if your rifle can exceed that then all is OK.
But remember to keep 2 cartridges for examination should you be queried on your loads in a comp.

rough calcs
200gn .338 at 2560fps 2911ft.lbs
270gn .366 at 2200fps 2902ft.lbs
Cheers

Hi,
I don't think the 9.3x53R will make the grade. The 9.5x57 just scrapes in. The energy factor is where it will come undone.
The 35 Whelan, 338-06, 318 Westley Richards are about the starting point.

The 9.3x57 easily makes it to 3,100fps+ in a Model 96 Swede with handloads. Even higher in a Model 98.
Mine ran:
270 @ 2,300fps
285 @ 2,200fps
300 @ 2,175fps

In these figures, the 286 low-balls but still passes at 3,074fpe.

Unfortunately in Australia the official rules state:
"Ammunition is to be as close as practical to factory ballistics of the original ammunition..."

...so juicing up an inadequate factory-load to sneak over the 2900 ftlbs energy level is technically illegal for competition.

The .444 Marlin makes it with the 240gr bullet though....

Quote:

Remington originally factory loaded the 444 Marlin with a 240 grain soft point bullet to 2,400 feet per second with 3,070 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle of a 24 inch barrel. Today Remington offers a soft point bullet with a ballistic coefficient of .146 loaded to a velocity of 2,350 feet per second with 2,942 foot pounds of energy at the muzzle of a 24" rifle barrel.

However like LesLeeSpeed I recommend the .318 WR for traditional reasons and the .338-06 in bolt-action rifles for practical reasons.

Seriously is that an issue? If a handload meets the ballistic criteria.

As the BGRC was setup to create target and range disciplines to provide purpose of use/jestifications for many classic firearms and calibres in case the banner authorities choose to try to ban many of these rifles/large bore calibres, I have always thought the .318 WR was the idea behind the minimum of the "nitro class 1".

Since the orgination of the club of course it has become a very established and real target shooting discipline.

No doubt that a 9.3x62 would qualify for nitro class 1. And in the absence of a .318, .338, .358 would be a good practical choice IMO. When I have shot it, I have used my .375 H&H Mag as that was the smallest I had for it.

Hi NitroX,
The 9.3x62 is a great choice for Group 1 competition. I use one myself. The OP's question was "Is it the minimum?" and will it make the grade?
Yes , it does and does it well.

I am going to acquire a 9.3x62 barrel for my Mauser M03. Not a "classic rifle" but a good usuable plaform for the calibre/cartridge.

Hoping to trade in a .30-06 solid M03 barrel (near new) to partly finance the 9.3 barrel.

BGRC experts

Seeing the original question is well answered, can removable magazines be used for BGRC competitions?

Never used my M03 for BGRC yet, but with a detachable magazine, it is difficult to load the rifle in the magazine. Where more than four shots is required for eg rapid fire competitions, would be far quicker to have a second magazine to load up instead.

If this possible? Thanks.

Hi NitroX,
I honestly have to say that I have never seen anyone do it, but there is nothing in the rules that I know of that prohibits it, so i cant see why not, but I am not involved in the rule making or interpretation.

Not sure about changing the mag specifically however I believe they are currently looking at those rules. Eg mag changes and say having a mag that holds for example 10 rounds.
For group 1 I use a BRNO 602 in 375H&H and it will fit 5 in the mag box and if you hold the rounds down you can slide one into the chamber. This works out well for the 6 shot competitions that are timed. For the 8 shot event (forgot the name) you need a reload.
Personally I like the events where you are under time pressure and you have to do a reload. There is a lot going on in 30 odd seconds and it is nice to get them all away with acceptable accuracy.

Loved that about my 1970 ZKK602 .358 NM - 6 rounds - on a flock of coyotes on old Pete Andersen's ranch. When shooting 200gr. RN's at 3,100fps, it doesn't matter where you hit them - it's an instant kill.

Have you thought about a 8,5x63 Reb barrel?

You like it so much, buy one yourself.

I would go for a .318 WR before that cartridge or a .333 Jeffery. Probably anyway.

I wonder how th 8.5mm in reality handles the wide range of projectile weights?

A 9.3x62 barrel would make a nice hunting cartridge for larger medium sized game, and running/driven game hunts.

Already have barrels in 8x68S and a .404.

A .375 H&H barrel might be another alternative but still have the issue with recoil and already have one in a Whitworth M98.

I'm debating about the short action equivalent, the .338/284, though it would probably be cheaper and quicker to find a R93 barrel in 8,5x63 and have at it.

Something smaller than the .375H&H appeals for Group 1 so my neck and shoulder unknot earlier in the following week.:D

How do you find the .404 on the M03?
