Meet my new mistress
      #26707 - 23/02/05 06:37 PM

Whereas I have been listening in on this forum I did not have the proper credentials to participate. So after deciding my next safari would be for elephant, I decided I wanted to take a piece of history with me, one that has probably killed far more elephants than I ever will. If the pictures come out right you will meet her. She is a 1908 Holland & Holland Dominion Sidelock .500/.465. and quite a lady. She handles like a dream and is grouping very well. She came with a proper English case with all the extras. Hopefully she will take a big bull in Botswana among other animals. [image]http://[/image] g

A beautiful rifle! I am fortunate to have had a chance to see the rifle in person in Dallas when CFA bought her.

I look forward to getting to shoot it!

Congratulations on your new rifle and I hope you find a great tusker to hunt with it.

In reply to:

Rubbish! All you need to participate is enthusiasm and a joy of hunting and shooting.

Good luck with your new rifle and what a nice one to start off with. We need some bigger pictures too. It looks a little familar, maybe they have been posted already (?)

Nice rifle!

Welcome to the forum CFA.

Regarding the photo link, I took the liberty to chase down the full size pic and make a link for you.

I hope you don't mind. We all want to see it.

Thanks for all the kind words. I have owned a lot of rifles but none have grabbed me like this lady.

I haven't posted the picture but someone else could have posted off of Champlains site.

Thanks for finding the proper way to post the full size picture. How did you do that? I couldn't figure it out.

CFA,

The link Rusty put up was to the thumbnail.

I right-clicked on the thumbnail picture he posted and selected "Properties" at the bottom of the pull-down menu. That displayed the property sheet for that object. The property sheet displays the Address (URL) for the object, which reads:

http://photobucket.com/albums/v392/CFA/th_hhdomin465y816.jpg

I triple-clicked on the URL to highlight the entire address, then with the cursor on the highlighted URL I right-clicked and selected "Copy". Then I closed the property sheet by clicking on "Cancel".

Next I opened a new browser window by keying "Ctrl-N".

I clicked on the webpage address of the new browser window to select that address. Then with the cursor on the highlighted address I right-clicked and selected "Paste". That inserted the web address for your thumbnail picture into the address line of the new browser window. Having done that I hit "Enter". The browser window then displayed the thumbnail. If you click on the web address above, it will open a new browser window displaying the thumbnail.

The next move took a little guesswork. I clicked on the address line of the new browser window, then struck the "End" key. That put the cursor at the end of that address. I then backspaced out the name of the thumbnail J-Peg. The address window was then displaying this:

http://photobucket.com/albums/v392/CFA/

I then hit "Enter".

That brought up the web page where your pictures are stored, which you will see if you click on the link above.

Your new "Lady" is the first picture on the page. You will notice that below each picture there are three lines of information. The first line is the URL of the picture. I clicked on that line, highlighting the URL. Then with the cursor on the highlighted line, I right-clicked and selected "Copy".

Then I composed my reply to your post, and at the appropriate place I selected "URL" on the "Instant UBB Code" menu, which appears below the text box. Doing that brought up the URL dialog box, which has a line for the URL you want to insert. In that line there appears:

http://

That provisional entry is already selected (highlighted). Placing the cursor on the selected text, I right-clicked and selected "Paste". That inserted the URL for your picture into the address line of the dialog box, replacing the "http://". I then selected "OK". That inserted the link to your photo into the post I was composing. I finished the post and posted it to the thread.

Sorry to be so long-winded, but you did ask. It's way off topic, I apologize to all.

Your rifle is indeed marvelous. I thought the photo looked like George Caswell's work, but I don't recall seeing that rifle on his website.

You need to keep us up to date with load development and shooting results. You are one of our community now!

Best to you and your "Lady". I bet she can be a "Bitch" when she speaks!

Curl,

Thanks for the detail, I think I clicked on "image" instead of URL.

George may never have put it up on the site as he got it right before Dallas and called me, then I bought it in Dallas. Very nice people to work with and it was comforting to know that if anything needed fixing JJ could do it.

I will post later with the final results and a picture of "My Lady" cased. Hopefully that big bull elephant will think that she is "one bad bitch".

CFA,

Good hunting! A rifle like this one begs to be hunted with.

The 465 was a very popular tiger cartridge in India in the old days. Hope you get a lion too after you get your elephant.

"if the double could speak what stories it would tell...?"

Ask CFA where his mistress is spending the nights.

All I can say is, "A Gentleman never tells."

Thomas

That's what I have been thinking, I do have the records from Holland in London showing it has not been altered as it is the same as was ordered in 1908. But how I wish I knew what animals she has taken and who hunted with her where. The rifle is all original and was completely refinished in London we think by Holland.

NE

Well the cats out of the bag NE is holding her ransom saying it takes quite a while to develop loads and to get her groups tight. He probably has finished her already and just wants to keep her close. The truth is, he is very experiencd at developing loads for doubles and I am not, so he very graciously offered to develope loads for me which I greatly appreciate. Hopefully we can take a few hog with her to introduce her to Texas at our DRSS hunt. She will probably think we are taking her to the gutters and should be after eles and lions but that's later.

Actually you double will love hunting pigs. Or any other game for that matter. Double rifles just want to be in the field. They KNOW that they are the best hunting rifles for any and all game taken 100 yards and under [open sited rifles] and to 300 yards [scope sighted rifles].

And the Holland handles as good as she looks.

...cfa, i would suppose that hollands would also have a history of original + subsequent owners, as well as repair records (submitted by intervening owners throughout the years)...perhaps an interesting project (undertaken by the kids?) would be to create a 'double gun genealogy' (seeking comments from relatives of former owners around the world) that could be posted online...who knows what you may find...may even increase the value of your double...

Thomas

That is a good idea although it might be hard to trace. I just found, in going over the only history that Holland was able to send me, that a Lady Brocklehurst ordered the rifle in 1908 in .465 India. Interesting, I just felt she deserved to be called a Lady and now find out the first owner was a real Lady, I guess there was a Lord Brocklehurst around somewhere. I will get some of my geneology friends to help me do some research on Brocklehurst and hope I don't hit a dead end.

...good show old chap, as they would say...

...now that you own a piece of history, you may wish to acquire the seminal book on hollands: the shooting field by peter king (original release in the mid 80s), as well as the recent follow-ons by safari press (mcintosh) and quiller press (dallas) for some fascinating history on one of the most celebrated of right honourable gunmakers...

...indeed, king's book (i believe) notes that many noblemen of that era had orders placed with hollands by 'third parties' for a host of reasons (seems reasonable, as i would rather doubt a 'lady' of that period would actually use a .465 calibre double...but who knows)...
