Perfect Bongo Rifle?
      #266983 - 26/06/15 05:58 AM

I booked two trips to Cameroon. Lord Derby Eland and Harnessed Bush buck in 2016. Bongo and Sitatunga in 2017.

I was originally thinking of bringing a SxS 9.3x74r but the rainforest does not look like a friendly place for nice walnut stocks. Kind of toying with a 400 Whelen on a stainless steel M70 with a laminate stock, maybe a short 20 inch barrel. XS gosht rings sights and a scout mounted qr 1-4x Leupold?

I have no experience in the rain forests and Cameroon is going to beat me hard. Any thoughts on the perfect Bongo rifle?

Myself? I would be taking the one you have..isn't that what it was made for? It is refreshing to see the scars of use on a rifle...you know it's loved!

It might be an Echols Legend in .375 H&H...

A 375, one planet, one rifle. Pick the model you like the most and crack on!

I have never seen, much less shot, a bongo. However, my friend, Professor Dr. Hans Schabel, took this specimen on a recent hunt in the Central African Republic. He had a choice between a Mauser in 6.5X55 and a BRNO 602 in .375 H&H with Nosler ammunition. Since the shot was taken in an open clearing, he chose the Mauser. The bongo went about 100 yards before expiring.

I used a .375 H&H for my two eland and one greater kudu, which I suppose correspond roughly in size.
