Wandered into a local gunshop just to kill some time. I spotted a somewhat
odd looking shotgun in sad shape in the rack so I just had to have a look.
It turned out to be a Remo Popular by Henry Boker and it needed a home and
TLC very badly so I buckled.
At one time it must have been a great looking gun, sporter stock with checkered grip etc.
I was under the impression that Remo Populars were converted 71 Mausers but maybe the
same name is used for both?
Any comments / insights will be appreciated. --- John

It's a 20, 24 or 28 bore?

Hi Daryl; I believe it's a 12 gau. probably 21/2 inch but haven't got that far into my "inspection".
the bore is like new so I think I'll "refurbish" it overtime - just another project - as if I needed one. A few parts missing but nothing serious, will try to find a parts gun first.
It's an interesting action due to the fact that not only the bolt handle but a small lug up front is used in the lock up. The stock is very English style, short fore-end and PoW grip.

Interesting, it have a different bolt head? Mine, a model 1871, 1876 version only has the bolt handle lug. I did not think the action was big enough for a 12 bore case.

As you know I have a 71 "Remo Popular", the action on the H. Boker, other than being a bolt,is not even close to the 71 / 71-84. I think it was mfged for shotgun purposes, I will take some pics for a show and tell. ---John

The Remo Populär was designed, patented and made by the Rempt brothers in Suhl. It was a successor to the Remo and Geha shotguns made by Rempt post-WW1 on surplus Mauser M98 actions. By the mid-1920s the supply of such "junked" actions had dried up and Mauser 98 actions became too valueable to be converted to cheap shotguns. Gebrueder Rempt, Suhl, patented the design of their Populär in 1925, DRP #443437. These shotguns were not conversions of any military bolt action, but were made from scratch by the Rempts.
Heinrich Böker, Remscheid, was a German exporter of tools and hardware.

Thanks for the info. kuduae. I had heard that these guns existed but had never even seen one until now.
They are quite well made IMHO. which = $ in most cases, so probably not many around. Inspite of the condition I'm glad to found one. --- John

Heinrich Böker did not make these guns, he merely exported John's example. The gun was made by Gebrüder Rempt, Suhl, trademark REMO. Böker's home Remscheid is the German center of hardware making with several export houses. Just as Suhl and Zella-Mehlis were the German capitals of gunmaking and Solingen of blades and cutlery.

imho, the action looks much stronger for a slug gun than the castrated M 98 action

I agree with you Lancaster, the action is shall we say quite "robust".
Unless it just has to be a Mauser I think one of these would be the way
to go. They aren't that pricey either, better find one before the word
gets out. --- John
