double discharge of a .577 Nitro Express

This is what happens when you double discharge a .577 Nitro Express, fortunately the gun was not hurt, but I can't say the same for the shooter. The gun weighs 12 1/2 pounds and you can clearly see he almost looses control of it completely. Bob

Does look like it did hurt a bit. And pushed him back a step. But he did hold onto the rifle.

Surprisingly less recoil than I thought would be.

Daryl,
First of all the gun has a very good recoil pad on it, that helps to take the bite out of it.
Second, this gun was built as a NfB rifle and the load is not the full .577 nitro with a 750 grain bullet at 2050 FPS., this one shoots a 650 grain bullet at 1850 FPS., that is quite a reduction in felt recoil. Still this gun recoils enough that I almost lost control of it a couple of times while regulating it. Part of the problem back then was that the forearm was too large to get a good grip on it. The one that is on it now is sized down to a smaller version of the old one, that is much easier to hold on to. Bob

Thanks Bob - explains the reduced recoil difference - was thinking .577 NE. I expect it was still a hell of a shock to the shooter. My right shoulder aches just watching it.

I re-watched the video - noting where the fellow was holding the forend. I see the forend appears, in the video, to be quite 'proud' (large) and appears the gun was not held by the barrels as it would be at the end of a sort splinter forend. I believe that would improve pointing ability to start with and muzzle control secondly.
