Interesting Gunsmith Built Swedish Rolling Block Rifle
      #266358 - 13/06/15 05:47 AM

I recently purchased several gunsmith-built rolling block rifles that came from Sweden. One is a 24 gauge with straight rifling, one is some indeterminate long .45ish cartridge and then this:

Not a very sexy sporting rifle, I admit, but it intrigues me nevertheless. It has a 34.25 Octagonal barrel. Very good bore. Built on a 1875 crown S receiver from a M64-68 military rolling block. Nicely figured wood. No cracks. Needs buttplate fitted. Chamber cast indicates case very near .38-55, but with a .360 bore??? It could be a .360 2" Black Powder Express, but I cannot find specific info. on the shorter .360 case. Based on a chamber cast, the base is .435, neck is .380 and length is 2.09. Seems that .38-55 brass could be slightly trimmed and front half sized down with .38 Spl. die, cases fire formed and .38 Spl. dies used to expand and seat a 145 gr hollow base .357 dia. bullet available from Buffalo Arms.

I am looking for some dimensional information on this round or any advise on getting this rifle shooting. Thank in advance.

Maybe this link helps you to determine the caliber:

Thanks. The rifle is not one of the commercially made Husqvarna rifles. The closest chambering they made was the 9.3x57R/360. Close, but no cigar. Too many odd-ball cartridge variations during that period.

Too long and bullet only .310. I think it is some odd variation close to a .360 2" BPE, but still not a perfect match. Perhaps some gunsmith's proprietary cartridge?

Husqvarna rifle Nr. 33, 33A and 34 with Remington rolling block has been made in caliber 9x47R. Those measures seems to be quite near yours.

The case in this instance is a straight taper. I have an M33 chambered in 9.5x47R. That is a bottleneck case. I have just about gat a workable case made from .38-55 swaged down with .357 sizing die. Still needs to be fireformed, as it still has a fat, squat bottom. Had to trim to about 1.85" and reduce diameter of rim. Rim is still too thick to chamber, so have been filing away at it. If I can find a local gunsmith to open up the rim pocket of chamber to take stock .38-55, then I am in business. Cheaper than a rull reaming out and even then, the bullet is smaller than a .38-55.
