Merkel 147E 12ga. Conversion
      #266345 - 12/06/15 11:13 PM

Hello
I am new to this forum and my first post. I found your Forum when looking for information on building your own double rifle, Awesome Forum!!
I am looking at making a double rifle in 450/400 NE or 500 NE. I have been looking for a suitable double shotgun for this project. I have come across a Merkel 147E 12 ga 2 3/4" for a very reasonable price. I would keep the 12 ga barrels and make the rifle barrels and block. What I would like to know, would this be a good action to start with for this project?
Thank you in advance for your input.
Regards

That is a very nice but expensive gun to be thinking about converting to a rifle. Check out Blackburns LLC-757arms.com and see what they have that would be just as good and much cheaper.
I know he has at least one nice Merkel on there for around $1250.00. Bob

Hi Birdhunter50, thank you for the info. I checked Blackburns to see what they had. I ended up picking the 147E for not much more than $1250! Heck of a deal to what I have checked out online. Will let you know how good a deal it was when I get it!!

PPK;

That seems to be a very good price for a 147E.

I offer a bit of comment for you. Some 147's have very small firing pin diameters and consequently a small diameter thru hole in the face of the action. While others have larger thru holes and some even have the much desired removable "striker discs" in the face of the action. Desirable for the double rifle builder.

Higher pressure double gun cartridges require firing pin and thru hole diameters appropriately sized.

You have there in Canada and maybe next door to you the extremely valuable knowledge, wisdom, skill and experience of an excellent and renown double rifle builder--Ron Vella who is a member of this board, who I am certain invites novices into his shop.

Good luck.

Thank you for the information!

I have been reading Ron's posts and looking at the beautiful guns that he makes. I have several questions that I want to ask him and the firing pins is one of them. Unfortunately the one I purchased doesn't have the removable striker disks. I was hopping that it did, but doesn't!

I want to keep the 12ga barrels and am just assuming that I will have to install removable striker disks and firing pins for the rifle barrels so I can change back easily. I don't know if I can buy them from Merkel or have to make them. To what I have been reading, on other forums and on the web, parts from Merkel are just about impossible to get. If anyone has some information on this, I would really appreciate it.

Thanks

Waltherppk:
Others here will have first hand knowledge and will probably give definitive answers but the issue is diameter of the firing-pin holes in the breech-face. If they are already small, then there is no requirement for removable discs to be installed. With a good grade of gun like the 147E I suspect you may be worrying unnecessarily.

Marrakai
I am hoping that it is too! I should know for sure later this week as I should have it in hand by then.
Looking forward to start this project.
Thanks
