Yeah that useless belt has really made the 375 H&H an obsolete and useless cartridge ...

And the .375 Weatherby is somehow superior?

My .375 H&H Mag is also on a standard length action and seems to work OK if projectiles are seated in far enough.

The .404 and .500 Jeffery as mentioned are good choices.

Nothing zipped over anyone's head - I saw the barb - my statement stands, the belt is useless, not needed on a cgt. with enough shoulder of headspace.

A belt neither makes nor breaks a round - it just that most don't need it.

Anyone who thinks a belt is needed on either the Taylor or the H&H - well, they're still on a long learning streak.

I agree Daryl, the belt is superfluous on a cartridge with a reasonbable shoulder.

Must be why I have 3 375H&H belted magnum rifles (and, to be fair, one double flanged magnum!).

The belt works ok on my 458win mag.

Would love another 404J, and a 505Gibbs or even 500J would be nice too!

If you have a gimmick why not have the original first one, the .375 H&H Magnum was the first with a magnum belt wasn't it?

Now the next commercial advertising gimmick is to tell everyone the belt is useless and everyone needs to buy a new rifle in some rimless beltless cartridge chambering. Why else would anyone buy a Remington or Winchester ...

Funny enough I think it was Winchester that really made the 375 H&H Belted magnum popular. Of course they then used it for their other eponymous cartridges.

I think an earlier H&H round was first to use the belt, though Pierre van der Walt writes it was actually an earlier American invention.

Wasn't the 400/375 the first belted.

the belt is indeed useless

you need it only in big machine canons.

you will find that any machine canon over 30 mm caliber use a beltet or rimmed case. why, when the rimless case with an extractor groove is the very best design for an automatic action?
such machine canons handle the rounds with such brutal force that cases making headspace over the neck will be set back when chambered. only belted or rimmed cases will be strong enough to handle such power and hold the original head space.

As Marrakai rolls his eyes ....

A belt may have been an idea and a gimmick but the rifles with belted catrdiges are not useless. I wonder now if that comment - ie the .375 H&H is obsolete and useless - was also said tongue in cheek considering the writer uses a .375 Weatherby Magnum and also admits to using a .375 H&H Magnum a lot, did he say somewhere he has more than rifle in this chambering.

Back to Marrakai's suggestion. I once wanted a .416 Chatfield-Taylor, the .458 Win Mag necked down to .416 and which works excellently in standard M98's.

I remember once being amused by a particular forum's netperts praising the performance of a .450/400 but saying the .416 Taylor was sub-marginal on the same game. Yet very similar ballistic perfomance. Made more friends that day when I pointed this out. From my keyboard knowledge of these two cartridges only however.

It was very tongue in cheek ...
