.465 H&H cartridge
      #266092 - 08/06/15 02:10 PM

Has anyone considered building a .465H&H on a standard Mauser 98 action. The cases can be made from .460WBY brass and bullets are available from Woodleigh. It has approximately the same length as a .404 Jeffrey. A drop box mag could hold 3-4 cartridges and even though it is a recent development (2003) it still has the H&H pedigree. 480gr bullets at 2375fps for 6012ft-lbs at lower pressures than a Lott. The only drawback I can think of is getting a barrel in that bore size.
Left to right: .375 H&H,.400H&H, .465H&H

I'd personally love one. I think when H&H did there .400 and .465 bolt gun cartridges they made them absolutely classic in styling.

I'd love one of each, but not until I have enough doubles. (Laughs maniacally.....)

My .375 H&H Mag is made on a standard M98 action. It works OK, however, cartridges need to be made to "length" and also feed in to the magazine at an "angle".

I wonder as I thought the .465 H&H Mag needed a longer action? If cartridges are at a .404 length however, maybe you are right.

The .465H&H mag because of its long neck is loaded to a COL of 3.5" or less with 480gr Woodleigh soft points or solids.
They are rimless and will feed in a normal fashion. Should not be confused with .500/.465 NE which is a rimmed cartridge 3.9" long and designed for double rifles.

I think the 400 H&H is the nicest of the two. I wish they had made it in .423 caliber though ...

It would be cool to see a line up of all of these loaded cartridges and unloaded brass lined up together.

Any one got them all in either loaded form or brass or both, and can take a good photo for us? Thanks.

What's wrong with the .404 Jeffrey?

Nothing wrong with the 404 Jeffery, these calibers mentioned above is just not in the 404 Jeffery`s league...

I have held the original "400" and "465" in the London Showroom and they are both made on standard 98 actions . I was in London a few weeks ago looking at some new H&H bolt actions and noticed they are now made using newly manufactured 98 actions as opposed to original 98 actions. Great calibers and they are getting good reports from folks actually hunting with them

300 H&H + 400 H&H is the ideal African battery. At least for me...

Kreiger makes a .468 barrel. So all the components to assemble rifle and ammo are there.

It's a nice cartridge no doubt and it sure looks 'right'.

However, it's not on my 'want' list for a couple reasons. Why .468" when .475" bullets are already established and prevalent? The cynic in me says it was because it hadn't been done therefore they can CIP register it as their own. Smart business move but there is a reason it's not caught on 12 years after it came in.
They have obviously gone belted so that they can run a nice sloping shoulder so it feeds lovely but then you have the belt which fights that ideal. A 500 Jeffery necked down to .475" and a 20 degree shoulder would feed like silk.
Plus the greater case capacity would mean you could achieve more performance for a given pressure or the same performance at lower pressure.

Just my two pence like. We don't NEED more cartridges but I do like having plenty of choice, I just don't WANT a 465 H&H.

To the above: H&H had a double chambering they came out with a century or so ago called the .465 nitro or something similar. This bore diameter for the .465 H&H will have been chosen for nostalgia's sake, this being the bore diameter of H&H in a previous cartridge. The name looks and sounds nice too.

As for belt defeating the purpose? Again, nostalgia. The belt on a .375, is it needed? It was to control headspace on those long, sloping shoulders - exactly what it does here as well. Let's face it, the .465 H&H has almost no shoulder, more a couple of tapers.

I agree. Nostalgia is lovely but I think they missed a trick to make a 'better' and more practical cartridge simply as they wanted to evoke memories of the past.
It's H&H, every rifleman knows them, they don't need a gimmick to attract customers.

I know why the belt was used originally, i just think they could have easily not had one with some basic revisions to the case.

At the end of the day, I'm hardly the target market for anything H&H produce so my opinion is void!

Has anybody bought or built a 465 H&H? I'm looking at several 465 H&H cartridge drawings and I'm seeing two different rim diameters, one is .602 and the other is .579. I know the .579 is the rim diameter of the Weatherby cartridges. Anyone know which is the correct rim diameter for the 465 H&H? Could a rifle be made to feed both rim diameters reliably?
