British contract Colt Official Police in 38/200.

Well it took several years longer than I was expecting, but I finally got this British Contract Colt Official Police (mfd. 1941) in 38/200 or 38 S&W with a 5" barrel. The finish isn't commercial grade of course (it was purchased during wartime for combat operations), but I had the internals checked out by an old-time gunsmith and he advised that it's very clean and in excellent shape. Now all I have to do is get some ammo for it. I paid $400.00 for those who are interested. I'm pleased. The British Official Police doesn't seem to be very common. My research says that Colt only made a little over 49,000 OP's in 38/200 during 1940 and 1941. In contrast S&W made something like 500,000 M&P's in the same caliber for England during WWII.

For fun. My newest OP next to my M&P w/5"bl (mfd 1947), OP in 38 Spl w/4"bl (mfd. 1935) and my pre war Heavy Duty (mfd. 1937).

The British Official Police compared to the commercial grade Official Police and the S&W Military & Police w/5" Barrel. Also commercial grade.

Well done! I love the look and feel of the pre-war Colt and S&W revolvers, right down to the smaller grips which feel better in my hand. The colts are extremely well made and excellent value if you avoid the rare collector pieces. I also have an Official Police, plain vanilla .38 with 4 in bbl. Feels just about perfect in the hand.

So far the Official police revolvers aren't getting the prices that we're seeing on the New Service and Pythons. Thank God. Now that isn't rue for all the OP's of course. I've seen some pretty hefty price tags on a couple 22 caliber OP's in the past couple of years. However they're still a great bargain and they don't seem to have been used as hard as the New Service models. At least not the one's I've come across and that isn't many.

Checkman

Your revolver with 38-200 on the barrel and a crown with a W inside it stamped near the hammer, is part of a distinct contract of 18,250 revolvers made for the British in WW2.

If you look at the base of the butt you will see a number which will be from 1 to 18250.
