I made certain that I had a bottle of Bombay Saphire on my safari. I had a Gin and Tonic every evening after a day in the bush. I attempted to recreate the classic British safari including shooting my game with a English double rifle and musing with fine English Gin.

bonanza

Another fan of Bombay, good to see.

I normally take 1.7 litres of the stuff up to the Northern Territory with me every year.

Nothing better after dropping a Buffalo with an English Double Rifle than going back and having a slow drink of Bombay and a mixer.

Nitro Express

2/3 Premium Vodka
1/3 Bombay Sapphire Gin
Garnish with your choice of (or combination) of Lemon Twist, Onion, Oilve
On the Rocks
In the event of a close encounter of the buffalo kind:
equal parts gin and vodka and omit garnish.

That is just about what I have been drinking (a lot) this summer.
My oldest brother got me drinking the very Martini which James Bond orders in Casino Royale. Usually it is called a Vesper Martini and is 3 measures Gin, one measure Vodka and 1/2 measure Kina Lillet shaken over ice and garnished with a wide shaving of lemon peel.
I am a Gin fan, but reversing the measures of Gin and Vodka (3 vodka, 1 gin, and 1/2 Lillet Blanc) garnished with the same lemon peel is a beautiful drink. I am using Skyy and Tanqueray since these are the only ones I buy and I don't like sapphire or infused gins. Also, Kina Lillett has not been available since the '30s, eventhough it is used in the '50s writing of Casino Royale but you can buy Lillett Blanc or Rose' in most better liquor stores.
It is my submission to be the "Nitro Express" since it is a potent mixture but at the same time has a very refined, gentlemanly quality to it. Elegant yet powerful.

A double shot of a nice single malt with a garnish of a few sticks of cordite is more the true meaning of relaxing on a "nitro express safari"

Why complicate things....the G/T is a classic with us in Africa too, I insist on Dry Gordons gin, and a little lemon. After dinner a tad of Calvados to help digestion..

If the evening is chilly then bring out the single malt and add a drop of water..

Gents, we really need to hammer this out!
Here I sit, on my fourth Gin &Tonic (Tanqueray of course), finishing off a nice Montecristo, yet I yearn to be enjoying the OFFICIAL "Nitro Express"!
I still think the Vesper Martini with the Gin and Vodka switched is an excellent candidate. Has anybody else tried it?
I do think, however, that the Nitro Express will need to forgo the shaking with ice since, ironically, the ice may be the most difficult ingredient to procure on a classic safari.
I am looking for input here...
As I have described before, the N.E. cocktail should be powerful, yet with a refinement and panache in keeping with a fine safari firearm and the romance of the classic safari experience.
Best quality throughout.

One needs a quality gin as a base (I like Bombay Saphire) but the quality of the tonic should also be considered. I have been using Fever Tree Indian Tonic Water which is high in natural quinine and tastes far better than the bulk mix drinks from Woolworths.

The Fever Tree website also has some good cocktail recipes on it.

Cheers

Summer time is the time for sundowners, hot, dry or humid evenings. A chilled drink as the sun sets.

In Summer I eat late usually after dark, which is around 9:30 to 10 pm, so dinner might be 9, 10 or 11 pm. Very Spanish. So a sundowner might be a pre dinner drink. Wifee is usually moaning about being hungry, so relaxed sundowners are rare.

I had a Sprtz recently at the tennis for the first time.

The eternal quest for the "Nitro Express" cocktail continues. As I don't put any organised time to it

It must be relevant to the Nitro Express theme, India or Africa.

It must be good to drink. If I don't like drinking it regularly, no way.

It must be quite simple, not some umbrella concoction.

Originality is a big problem. Most cocktail formulas already exist

***

As an alcohol, rum and gin are obvious.

Rum made from sugar cane tropical

Gin is just raw alcohol flavoured with herbs and flavourings, diluted with water. But gin and tonic, a tropical favourite. Tonic water with quinine a protection against mosquitoes and malaria. The volume of tonic water required to be drunk is huge for effective protection.

Though whiskey would be a safari essential.

Brandy as it comes from grapes is a strong one for me.

White spirit would be very strong for me as a base. Local gins are often made from wine spirit. Adding water and herbals and flavours

Sparkling champagne was popular on luxury safaris.

I've been drinking a "Christmas Gun" with Dry Ginger Ale. With ice

Cherries, figs, citrus, vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon, and lavender are the flavourings of the Prohibition Christmas Gin

Ginger Ale, made from ginger, ginger is an exotic tropical spice. Fitting for the Tropics theme of Nitro Express. A suitable mixer for a NE cocktail.

Spirits from different countries.

Whisky from Scotland.
Schnapps from Germany.
Cognac from France.
Palinca from Transylvania.
Rum from the Caribbean.

What is a unique spirit from India?

From Africa? East Africa? Southern Africa?

Still mostly prefer locally brewed Pacific (Brewery) Pilsner. A decent single malt is also nice. Singleton's is decent and only $65.00 cnd.

^ @Marrakai and I enjoying a refreshing late afternoon 'Sundowner' in the Territory last year after tipping over some bovines.

Made with Gordon's 0% alcohol, in order that clearer heads might prevail.

I guess it's the glass. Looks like sparkles in the glass or is that the tonic water.

@DarylS yep Tonic bubbles.

@Waidmannsheil & @NitroX - John & Matt - a few of your fellow skeptics have been pleasantly surprised some of the the 0% offerings ;-)

There are plenty to choose from now - including a few from RSA.

Sorry John - this hasn't helped answer your questions in bold ;-)

One big problem with a named NEW cocktail is originality.

Nothing more seems to be able to be made original?

Some use a brand name to be "original". Cheating a bit in my opinion. Eg Cocktail X, uses Gin X , plus other ingredients. If Gin X is pretty standard juniper flavour it's cheating, if flavoured differently it might be legitimate. Merely a brand name, not.

A marula berry gin might be a unique African flavour "on topic". Maybe a Marula berry based wine, brandy? If such exists. Amarula liquor?

A Southern African flavour.

Amarula Liquor Cream is of course made from Marula berries from the Marula tree. Some say better than Bailey's.

Naturally fermenting Marula berries are said to get elephants drunk. Antelope drunk etc.

An Amarula cream cocktail? I don't think so. A bit feminine. A "Nitro Express" cocktail needs to be manly.

Maybe like Bailey's and Butterscotch schnapps makes a "Cowboy Cocksucker", Amarula Cream and Butterscotch schnapps
Seeing it will be white or cream coloured, maybe a little butterscotch coloured, it could be called more politely a "White Hunter" for the ladies to enjoy.

There's one, assuming it's original, the "Nitro Express White Hunter"
