Building a .375 H&H using Winchester 70 pre-64 action

Still in the white, a .375 H&H magnum made on a pre 64 Winchester 70 action.
Fully blue printed action with cloverleaf contoured tang.
25'' Lothar-Walther barrel fitted with D&D iron pattern sights and claw mount, the rear base incrusted in the action bridge.

I am afraid that the length of the scope, as reflected by the location of the front claw mount base, means a very long scope with a very large objective, neither of which, in my opinion, makes sense on a .375 H&H, unless the rifle is intended for hunting boar by moonlight.

Xausa, alas you are right, the customer has ordered a big Swarovski Z6 scope with illuminated reticle as he plans to shoot at night: leopard in East Africa and especially red deer in Central Europe.
We would have preferred a less bulky optic like a light and slim 2-7x36…but as you know: it is the one who pays who orders !

I presume he is planning to carry the rifle with the scope dismounted and will be only be using it for more leisurely longer range shots. This would be the only sensible plan, since the stock is clearly designed to position the shooter's face in line with the open sights, and will offer little support when he is peering through the scope. Not an ideal setup for rapid target acquisition in the event of a charging lion or buffalo!

It never ceases to amaze me that someone who would probably accept his tailor's advice in having a suit fitted would fail to listen to his gun maker's advice when ordering a fine firearm, especially since his life may depend upon getting the latter design right.

DORLEAC, great action to use as it is a true magnum length, work is superb as always!
What is the trick with the front ring screws, hidden well in the stippling?
Did you extend the original magazine downwards or is it a completely new one to suit the stock?
Will certainly be an unusual piece, but if the customer is paying then he/she gets what they want!

Superlative as expected from you. You never disappoint. The only improvement I could think of is having used an Oberndorf action. I'm sure you will make some American very happy.
That's the bottom metal I would have used on the 9.3x62 in your other post.

Wanabebwana, you are right, I would have preferred to use an Oberndorf magnum action, but as stated earlier in the post, it's the man who pay who order !

Joel, that has turned out magnificent, I especially like the checkering pattern which is very classic and suits the rifle very well. Most Custom Model 70 rifles that come out of the USA have a fleur de lis pattern which while perfectly executed, gets boring after a while in my opinion. You seem to have managed to perfectly balance the entire rifle and even the left hand side which on many custom Model 70 rifles can look very long and slab sided, seems well balanced on yours.

I think I prefer a little more checkering at the wrist, but it is quite elegant, isn't it. V-nice, especially the colour cased butt cap which appears to have a trap.

Lovely looking rifle, I love the wood too. Shame about that scope, as mentioned earlier. Given the advance in optics in the last 20 years I am not convinced you need an objective like that. I have a humble Marlin in .44 rem mag with a Leupold VXII 1.1-5 x20 I think, and use it for running boar in Spain. Never noticed any problem finding the target though this all sub 100 yd stuff, usually sub 75. Still, as you say Joel, he who pays the piper...

Thank you very much for posting Joel. Why you continue I am not sure with the grief you get , but I for one appreciate seeing your amazing work. There are many things I could pick apart about all the rifles you post, but why ??? None where built to my specs, what does it matter. The workmanship is what I want to see, the finish product is beauty to the buyer, whether I approve or not. Heck, I use Weatherby's, we know how loved they are here.

Thanks to all for your comments.
As you have noticed we build rifles for "customers" and we try to make the best of the client order.
The challenge is to respect the customer in building a rifle bearing our name engraved on...
We have in the making two big bores for Nitro Express members and we shall be glad in publishing pictures in the nearest future !

WOW. One of the most beautiful 70sever produced. Does the pre 64 need to have as much metal removed from the lower locking lug shoulder as a Mauser 98?
