Steyr M95 in 7X57R

Hello gents, I have the chance to buy this Steyr that was built by Peter Hambrusch Ferlach. The asking price is just shy of $500 USD. Caliber is 7X57R. Any thoughts? I think it would make a great collector's piece as a hunter not so much given the availability of the ammo. Any thoughts on the value of this thing?

hard to say because they are rare but 500 is a good price. scope collector's will pay up to 200 euro alone for the scope today.

Thanks Lancaster. I have tried to look up their value but have had a hard time finding anything on them. For me this would likely be an investment to sell onwards at a later date since it is in such good condition. I couldn't in good conscience take this hunting and get it knocked around.

How rare are these things compared to a standard m95? I have found some info on m95's online and on Youtube but nothing on this particular type.

I'll contact the gent today however it looks to be in good shape from the pictures.It will look nice beside my recently aquired Schönaue. I just need to convince the minister of finance first.

The scope appears to be mounted directly above the receiver, not off-set, like the M95 sniper rifles. How can it be loaded with the en bloc clip?

its the common claw mount - you take the scope off, set the clip in and than again the scope on the rifle

I thought of that, but rejected it. It seems like a convoluted way of reloading. The sniper rifle with the offset mount makes much more sense.

five rounds are enough for most hunting situations in europe and in this times it was common to have the scope in a leather box and set it only on the rifle when there was a chance for a "long range" shot. the attitude against scoped rifles was a little bit different then.

Point taken. The same was true to some extent in this country, as exemplified by the pre-War Griffin & Howe Springfield sporters, with both Lyman 48 receiver sights and scopes in G&H side mounts. Significantly the scopes were mounted high enough to allow them to be used without removing the slides on the receiver sights.

Maybe the rifle is built on the same idea as the Yugoslavian M95M conversions in 8x57 using a sheet metal insert captive in the magazine in place of the ammunition enbloc clip.

The insert stays in the magazine and allows single rounds to be loaded into the mag. The over the bore scope mount wouldn't be an issue. The magazine still uses the M95 original follower arm and spring.
Would work perfectly for the 7x57.

Looks like a great rifle. I'd buy it in a moment for that price.
