For sale in the US. An interesting design, and very unusual, to say the least.

I do enjoy the old Krags!
I made this one for a fellow a few years ago.

I have another one coming up this year to make.

"Rare Norwegian Krag M.48 Moose Rifle by Kongsberg

Price: $2,495.00
Maker: Norwegian
Model: Krag
Caliber: 8mm

Description: Serial #5743, 8 x 57mm “Moderat”, 23” barrel with a fine, bright bore that has traces of freckling within the grooves. This 1918 dated rifle is one of only 500 of these sporting arms made at Kongsberg Arsenal by converting Model 1912 Krag carbines into “Elgrifle” (Moose Rifle) configuration just prior to 1950. The rifle 85-90% of the armory blue finish blending with a mellow plum-brown patina on the balance, and having fading and silvering at the muzzle and on the other high edges and projections. The bolt retains its correct armory bright finish with knurling on the flattened knob, and is nubered to the gun. The correct checkered pistol grip sporting length stock and handguard are in very good condition with some minor handling marks in the original armory oil finish and some mild flattening of the points. The rifle has its original front sight blade with white metal insert and the distinctive dial adjustable rear sight peculiar to these rifles (adjustable for 100 and 300 meters). This model was quickly superseded by the M.51 variant that used a simpler two leaf rear sight instead. These are exceedingly rare rifles and are seldom seen in the U.S., and this example rates fine-near excellent condition overall. Please Note: Although these rifles are chambered for the 8 x 57mm cartridge, the Krag action is not strong enough to handle full power loads. Because of this, a special low power loading was developed specifically for these rifles: the 8mm “Moderat” round which developed about 10% less pressure than standard 8mm sporting rounds. Consequently, full power 8mm Mauser cartridges should NEVER be fired in this rifle. FFL or C&R"

with only 500 made its a very rare hunting rifle today
http://www.kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Rifle&weaponid=RIF0109
the M 51 wih 1000 rifles made is in the end not seen more often http://www.kvf.no/vaapen.php?type=Rifle&weaponid=RIF0110

they were made by Kongsberg for cleaning up the old stock of Krag action after the war. with a 8x57IS load reduced by 10% I think any comercial made american sporting ammo must be safe in this rifles.

interesting Norma had the time to make the special 8x57IS "Moderat" load for this rifle

after the M 51 came the M 52 with a M 98 action we had seen here before, iirc

1957 Kongsberg price list: 325 Kroner for the M 48 and 500 for the M 52

1959 price list, M 52 reduced for 450 Kroner

the Kongsberg hunting rifles are an interesting topic

Lancaster,

Thank you, my friend, for your effort in saving the pictures. You find so many rare and unusual rifles, and it is natural that this one caught your eye as well! Thank you for adding your earlier post, as well!

Mr. Szihn, The few sporters I have seen and also the chopped up ones also always had a short section of the barrel threading shown. Yet your pics do not show this. May I ask how this was accomplished? Seems a classy way to cover up whatever threads that show on the barrel. Beautiful rifle by the way. My krag is the model of 1898 that saw Bubba work his magic on. Cut bbl to 25", install sporter type front ramped front sight, kept the issue rear sight, and almost cut the wood too short for the first barrel band.Price was good as soon as I saw the condition of the bore. Thanks again, Frank

Okay, here's my Grand-Dad's 30-40 Krag "moose" rifle, although he never shot any moose with it.

Just mainly Midwest deer, coyotes, one or two ground hogs, a tax collector once in a while, or whatever ...

As best I can tell, it's a 1930-ish build.

That looks to be a quite nice Krag. Great lines. Mind telling us more and perhaps showing a few more pics? Did your Grand-Dad build it?

Hello FrankS
I am unsure what you mean by "Short section of barrel threads showing".
But in this cast the rifle has a new 28" long barrel of my own making.

Well, not that I did the bore, .... it started out as a 30" blank, and I did all the turning and contouring.
I have been a barrel maker in the past but I find it better to buy blanks from McGowen or Green Mountain these days.

What I meant that you can see a very short part of the barrel threads showing. Since uses the square type of threads similar to the model of 1917 U.S. Enfield and the British P14. Nothing unsafe about the threads showing though. I have shot this cut down rifle (model of 1898 with a 1901 cartouche date) many times with remington 180 grain 30-40 Krag ammo. Thanks for the reply. Frank

When I make the barrels I measure the socket of the receiver and I set the shank to the exact length. So there is no "extra" to show at all. The barrel if left only .015" smaller than the receiver itself. This is done because many Krags have a slight radius on the front edge of the receiver. If the receiver ring is square and sharp it's best to leave the barrel the same diameter for about 1-3/4" so the transition from action to barrel is perfect and it makes for a very nice looking installation.

I have another Krag in the works right now. It has a cut down GI Barrel, but I am considering re-barreling it. It is 24" long now, but some of these old Krags look best when the barrel is 26-28 inches long. I have not made the decision yet. For iron sights longer is easier to shoot precisely, but they are not "more accurate". It just easier to use a longer sight radius than a short one. The 30-40 will burn all it's powder in only 20-21 inches, so the extra length is just for sight radius and for "looks"

What do you guys think?

I have some nice French Walnut to use for the stock. Nothing very fancy, but good looking wood none the less. Should be a very nice hunting rifle when it's done. One option I am considering is to fit a Williams receiver sight to it and leave the rear sight off completely. If I do that it sure would be a whitetail hunters dream.

I personally like to stay with the original 220 grain loads for my Krags. It's more bullet than you need for deer, but so what? It is also pure magic on elk and bear. I zero the guns in perfectly with my 220 grain loads and it's fast and easy to move up to the higher sight setting for a longer shot, but for 95% of all the shots most hunters take with them, the 100 yard zero is fine

Szihn, had a computer crash and have to apologize in being so late in thanking you for detailing how you fit the barrels to your krags. Sadly down here in Louisiana krags are very seldom seen and some sporterized ones have asburd asking prices. Thanks again,Frank
