CZ 458 Lott
      #26401 - 16/02/05 04:27 PM

After searching for many various different rifles all of which were out of stock I finally found one that I wanted that a distrbutor has on hand. It's a CZ 550 American Safari 458 Lott, it'll be here on friday!! Where on earth can I find brass no one seems to have any in stock? Any moderate load suggestions? Are the express sights worth a damn on this gun or should they be replaced? Thanks.

You may have to order your 458 Lott brass. Try www.huntingtons.com or www.midwayusa.com. In the mean time you can use 458 Win brass/ammo.
A friend of mine has a 375 CZ. The sights look crude from the side, they are big and bulky looking, which means they are strong, but when aiming they are fine.
Good luck on your new rifle.

I have a CZ in 416 Rigby. The sights are one of the very best features of this excellent rifle. The front bead is readily interchangeable to get it to regulate to sights or to move to a larger bead.Shoot the rifle with the open sights at game and you will be pleasantly surprised.I was amazed how useful they were on a wild pig hunt in Cape York
last June.

Nframe,

I have the CZ 550 American Safari in .458 Lott too. Nice rifle. Per your question about ammo, I found mine (Hornady 500 grain soft points) through a local Bass Pro which uses a source known as www.zanders.com. This site is mainly set up for FFL holders and dealers but, customers can "look" at the products too. Might give it a try.

A question for you - did your rifle come with cross bolts? Mine has none (at least that I can see) and I'm worried about the stock eventually cracking.

V

There are a couple of gunsmiths in the Southeastern of the country who could cross-bolt and glass bed it for you. Depending on their work load, it shouldn't take that long. Besides, if you're worried about it now, it'll save you quite a bit of mental anguish later. It'll probably improve your accuracy a bit too.

vladimir, It won't be here until friday but I will certainly check for you once it arrives. As for the ammo at almost $70 a box it's going to be a handload only rifle, just seems that everyone is backordered on the brass, I've already got a 458 WM so I can shoot it but I want Lott brass so I don't mess up the chamber. It will stay with the open sights as I don't scope .45's or bigger, just wondering if they were any good.

458 Lott brass is pretty much unavailable at this time--I have some Hornady backordered from Midway--you can get some Hornady #8798(need to double check that #) brass and trim it down to work(getting a trimmer may be fun)--it's their basic magnum brass--no head stamp--

should be at least one crossbolt on the gun--better add another crossbolt and glass bed it--everything I've read says that after 100 or so rounds you'll have a cracked stock--

RCBS makes a trimmer, but I believe it's a custom order thing and may take 30 days to get(that's what I've found so far)

you can have Lee make you one also--probably same time frame--chris

Thanks for the info on the stock, that really sucks! As for the brass I called Hornady today and they said the end of March to early April at the BEST. Should have bought the Rigby.

As mentioned in earlier post, Midway and Hornady are not the only sources for brass. You did well picking the caliber you did, it is one of th best DG offerings out there. (subject to debate I'm sure) You would have to shoot a whole heck of a lot of 458 Win. to damage your chamber, somebody did a test (heck if I can recall who?) and they found that after 700+ rnds or so, no effects.. Yes, the sights are bulky and somewhat crude, but as mentioned they work and work well. Their biggest asset is they are very sturdy, and yes the stock is the weak link. Be sure to have it at least glass bedded and perhaps a crossbolt added.. AHR makes a fantastic trigger to replace the piece of crap set system (IMHO).. Other than that, enjoy and good shooting....

Yeah it arrived and looks and feels great!! About the set trigger it's probably about a pound or less!!! On a 458 Lott what are they thinking? Unset it's smooth with just a little creep, and the sights WOW!! Sturdy is the word. Overall I think it's a very nice weapon with a very classy look to it, not a Rigby or Westley richards but still classy.

popular caliber at the moment and reloaders have bought the brass up--probably wasn't a great supply of it to start with it, so it went fast-- a month ago or so I couldn't find any ammo either, except for A-square stuff at Midway which I bought, so I could at least shoot and have some stuff to reload with--now I just have to get out there and do some blasting--but I too still need Lott brass as I don't have any---I have some on backorder out of Midway, but no idea when it will be here---chris

Dude, seems everybody is concerned about having properly headstamped brass nowadays. Besides, if you've seen the cast bullets used for blowing out the case, you'd go nuts making enough of them to get a goodly supply of brass.

Scott--try and call Hornady direct and see if they have it yet-- www.hornady.com -- I went thru all the way before giving my cc # and nothing came up saying it wasn't available, so they may have it--it's more expensive($10-$12) than getting it at www.midwayusa.com or one of the other places, but at least you'd have some---chris

EXACTLY RIGHT! BOTH THE LOTT AND THE FATHER OF THIS CONCEPT, THE 450 WATTS WERE WILDCATS MADE FROM BLOWING OUT 375 BRASS AND SHORTENING IT ABOUT 1/3".

I don't see where anyone would need to worry about a headstamp. If you can't tell a 458 from a 375 at a glance, stay with a 22 L.R.

head stamp comes into play when you leave the country, so if you stay here no worries using either the 375 case or the Hornady basic mag case trimmed down---chris

Dude, I see in your other post that you're going to keep the CZ, does that you aren't going to get rid of your brass? Since you say that you are going to hang on to it, you might as well hang on to everything else.

Good Point! I have never had my ammo inspected, but one never knows when dealing with petty government agents.
