Stalking Stags in Perthshire
      #263868 - 20/04/15 06:29 AM

I've meant to post these photos and stories for some time but life has been rather busy with work and family.

As many on Nitroexpress know my main area of interest in shooting and hunting is late 19th century Scottish and Indian deer stalking. So I've been making some trips up the Perthshire with Vernon Waters to stalk stags over recent years. Vernon runs a top class organization and he's a wonderful person to deal with.

The head stalker, Jimmy, who is a retired stalker for the forestry and can walk any younger man into the ground.

Scotland, in addition to charming red headed lasses, good beer, and fine meat pies, also has a great deal of hunting/sporting tourism sites.

Anyone interested in red stag stalking should pay a visit to Blair Castle.

Back in the 1830s William Scrope was a guest at Blair Athol estates and stalked stag. He then wrote a book about it in 1838 'The Art of Deerstalking" it was arguably the first book on the subject, and he helped (along with the larger Scottish romantism of the Victorians) popularize Scottish deer stalking for British sportsmen.

Some trophies at Blair Castle:

Also, Scrope mentions in his book that once he left Blair Castle he left his rifles there (oddly Scrope appears never to stalk deer much after he wrote his book...). So when visiting I went on a quest to find them. Normally you cannot take photos in the Castle in the area the weapons are but I was lucky. The people at the museum had never heard of Scrope and were intrigued by my story. So perhaps these are his rifles? Not sure, but likely Scrope used percussion cap 16 bore rifles.

For those interested in modern guns, the shop for Dickson & MacNaughton is not far away...

Thanks for the walk around Scotland, Chasseur - one of these days, my wife and I will visit Loch Sloy, my ancestor's homeland. "Loch Sloy", was the battle cry.

So beautiful! I lived in Pertthshire for about 6 months in the 1970s, and never saw any of this. I must return and see it for myself and perhaps schedule a hunt. Thank you again for sharing your photos.

I am off to Blair in two days time for a weekends F Class 1000 yard competition. A magical estate, deeply entrenched in the history of Scottish stalking and Queen Victoria.

The picture below shows our firing points and a 1000 yards further on you can see the electronic targets.

Before we start shooting for the day, often you will see the red deer on the tops.

More photos:
Recently I had a wonderful four days of stalking on two different areas, yielding three 8 point hill stags and 1 nobber management stag.

With the newest member of Hendry, Ramsey and Waters, David Muir a former professional rugby player: First eight point stag:

Patrick,

I just sent you an email, and after sending it I ran into this hunt report. It sounds like you have been having a lot of fun in Scotland from time to time. I'm envious!

Patrick

Thanks for the thread, photos and stories.

What a wonderful life of hunts you have with a number of visits to Scotland for hunts over the years.

Missed the original posts, and glad to see it now.

Gentlemen,

Never feel shy to re-open older posts and bring them to the current view again. Always new members and also others who missed them the first time. And additions to older threads like Patrick has done is always more than welcome.

My mistake, that is Loch Lomand. "Loch Sloy" was the MacFarland call to arms and battle cry, seems to me.
