barrel engraving .303
      #263599 - 15/04/15 03:26 PM

I have recently re-barreled a Field actioned Gibbs in .303 British. The original barrel was engraved with 'GEORGE GIBBS, BRISTOL' but no caliber markings. I wish to put the caliber description on the barrel this time. Can anyone please tell me what the typical description /engraving for the .303 cartridge would be?
Thanks,
Charls

Here's how my Westley Richards is marked (dates to 1901):

And here's how my Webley & Scott is marked (dates to 1937):

My Purdey is not marked for caliber.

Hope this helps.

Thise are two great examples Curl.
My two Gibbs 303s, Frase and Lee Speed don't have anything like that, just proof marks below the wood.
Engraving it like W&S gives the option of indicating which bullet weight it is rifled and sighted for too.

Thanks, I appreciate the responses.
At this point I am leaning towards a simple - '.303 CARTRIDGE'
interesting, this rifle has the address;
GEORGE GIBBS, 29 CORN STR, BRISTOL
I thought that Gibbs vacated those premises in the late 1880's and the .303 British only become available in the early 1890's.
Slight discrepancy there!

Beautiful rifles CptCurl, love those Westley Richards, is the 303 the one in you screen shot ?

I think the 303 came out in the 1888 MLM - Lee Metfords first in BP, so may be earlier still ?

What did you do with your old barrel, how bad was it ?

Thanks Sarg,

These rifles are posted here on NE.com. The Westley Richards is displayed here:

And the Webley & Scott is displayed here:

They are just a couple of old codgers who hang around in my gun safe.

The peep sight on the Westley is just neat.
