BSA STEYR .303
      #262897 - 29/03/15 07:24 AM

I'm hoping some one on NE. can shed some light on this ol .303.
I bought this several years ago ,they told me that it used to be a target rifle.
The wood is not relieved enough to accept a clip and it has a two stage trigger.
The barrel was unblued when I bought it.
I's marked STEYR 1896

On the barrel
BSA
Special BSA barrel
Specification 1933
.303 MkV11 cartridge
Weight under 3lbs 4oz
cordite 31 215 bullet
It has a 3 digit serial # the last two of witch are also stamped on other parts of the gun.
thanks

Very nice rifle but it just needs correct styled open sights....

Nice rifle - good shape- target rifle? - not a chance. Needs sights.

Are you sure that's not 3.4 kilos?

That would be 7.48 pounds which is closer to what a rifle sans scope should weigh.

Could be a target rifle. Seems I have seen a similar one offered recently with a back position rear sight.
Will see if I can find that info.
Perhaps this one has had the barrel cut back losing the front sight mount?

I once saw a picture of a Steyr .303 bisley rifle ,30" barrel in the white (as this one was)
with a notch on the but for a rear sight. That and what I was told when I bought it is all the info
I've got.
It does say "weight under 3lbs 4 oz"
.303 cartridges don't fit in the clips and the clips don't clear the wood ,
so I was thinking of mounting a scope on the barrel maybe one of those
replica Unertals and single loading it.

Odd, i have an M95 (Dutch Hembrug Mannlicher, not the straight pull) and it feeds 303's from the clips with ease. Can we get a pic inside the action?

Interesting, I've owned and used a number of "target" rifles and the lightest one was over 9 pounds and that was a .22. All the CF's were at 'weight' 10 pounds 4 ounces with sights.

The reclining back position was used by American, Irish, Canadian and British marksmen in the 1880's at Creedmoor and Bisley. The maximum weight of rifles for those events was 10lbs. 4oz, I believe. What the weights were later on, in the 1900's, I do not know.

I have seen a lot of these in the UK made into 303 target rifles, this must have a BSA barrel added
But most of those target rifles are made to shoot the 174gr MKVII round I would think ?

Could that be the barrel weight alone ?

Cool rifle I'm after one of these in 303Brit .

Here are a couple of pics without the barreled action.
Couldn't get the bottom metal out.

You can see the clip inserted from the bottom, thats as far as it goes.

And from the top

I hope that's the right clip

For a minute I thought you were loading from the bottom & made a reply LoL !

Looks like the right mag, maybe it was made as a limited shot for the target application ?

If I get a chance I will slip mine out of the stock & look for you

Found a couple on my computer, hope they can help ?

Just got some .303 cartridges and they do fit in the clip if I try real hard.
I might just file the stock for clearance.
Any ideas how to get the bottom metal off ,it dosent even wiggle.

Good pictures of a work in progress, but don't forget to finish the wood after you bed the action.

It may have been said already, but I have seen reference to these, and they are target rifles. I believe I see provision for a back position or recumbent position sight near the heel of the butt on the top?

Is the barrel weight stamped over the chamber?

The specification of 215gr. in MkVII .303 is a bit odd as that was the weight up to MkVI, when the weight dropped to 174gr. IIRC.

That fits with a long range application though: heavier bullet gives better resistance to cross winds.

Did you mean my rifle Daryl ?

If so that is my 100yr old Gibbs stock, I dont think it had been shot when I got it & certainly never out hunting since it was built, I got it with out a bolt & I think that is why it was never used ?

Yes Sarg - that white wood needed sealing, I thought.

Here, an unfinished interior is the recipe for swelling, poi change and possibly a broken/cracked stock during the hunting season.

Usually, we're quite a dry area, average humidity is only 50% - but in the fall, it can rain on you every day of your hunt and thoroughly soak your rifle - every day. Same in Alaska, but with even more rain. Not only the metal, but the wood needs protection too.

I'm with you on that 100%, funny to see a known maker leave it like it is, stranger still to see it virginal on a vintage 100yr old rifle, looks like it was inletted the other day !

I spent a couple of months in Alaska & it sure can rain a lot alright !
