BOSS Double rifle in 5.6x50R
      #263230 - 08/04/15 01:19 AM

Posting this on behalf of Ahmed577 who is having the following rifle made by Boss.

Quote:

This had come out beautiful, we will darken the wood as we finish it.

Quote:

I need to ask if you have a bullet weight preference when we regulate the 5.6x50R rifle -
The choices are
50 grain
55 grain
63 grain?

Gentlemen, your thoughts.

I use 70 gain bullets in my .22 Savage High Power (5.6X52R), so I would say, "The heavier, the better." 63 grain, by all means.

The heavier the better.
Go 63

If the barrels will do it go 70

63 grain it will be, RWS factory loads. Gun pictured is 410 o/u boss s-n 10410. Meant to have POW stock however had a knot in the wrong spot. Am just as pleased with S-H stock. The 5.6x50R is also an o/u boss s-n 10356. Battery of 6 nearing completion. Paid first deposits October 2007.

I really like the straight grip on a light double rifle.
Very fast and handy.

Ahmed577,
that is one beautiful butt stock of timber there!
I agree with Xausa & Tinker, the heavier the better; the lighter ones should then still stabilise in the faster twist required.
Hope it comes soon, looks an awesome piece of kit - will it have both open sights & scope?

9.3x64 the5.6x50R will have open sights and a Q-D scope. It will be the lightest calibre O-U built by boss to date.

Rolf thankyou for your offer. I will soon have the factory groups using RWS factory 63 grain projectiles. Will report on this in due course.

Thanks Ahmed. Didn't realise the photo sent with the email was a .410 by Boss, but makes sense as the filename included 410 ... makes sense.

My comment direct to Ahmed his question:

Quote:

For a 5.6x50R my preference would depend on the use planned. I think when I shot a double rifle with a barrel in 5.6x50R it was 55gr Hirtenberger “Nosler” style partition bullets. For use on roe deer in Europe. The other barrel was a .22 Magnum barrel for small game. The 5.6 barrel was nice and accurate. The .22 magnum barrel was not as accurate.
.
I like a 50 gr bullet in my .222’s for small game such as rabbits, foxes, hares. Actually even a lighter bullet such as a 45gr. I prefer the 55gr when I use my .222 to shoot fallow deer for meat. Go for brain shots only. A 55 gr or 60 gr plus bullet would be better for small deer or roos. And of course if you plan to use it on goats or feral pigs.
.
Myself, I would choose a 50 gr projectile for it.

I didn't think of the use of a heavier projectile might make it easier for regulation if trying lighter bullets later on.

Good to see the answers and ideas provided here on NE.

More on Ahmed's double rifle.

The quesion was, is this a good scope for a Boss double rifle in 5.6x50 mm Rimmed? Especially regarding balance.

A Swarovski 1-6x24 scope.

The firearm in the photo is a Boss Under and Over in 28 gauge which is used for illustration purposes but is similar to what the 5.6x50R rifle will be.

All of Ahmed's commissioned rifles will bear unqiue and interesting serial numbers relevant to the cartridge, in this case 10356.

Thanks NitroX. Beautiful rifle.

Is that scope the EE model?

I am thinking of one for my 375 Flanged Magnum, protrudes less and looks better balanced.

Cheers,

Chris

"The firearm in the photo is a Boss Under and Over in 28 gauge which is used for illustration purposes but is similar to what the 5.6x50R rifle will be."

If that 28g Boss has now served its purpose as an illustration can I please have it?

Back to topic I think the scope looks a bit big against that sized gun. For my taste the eyepiece is too big.
Just my humble opinion.
Rick

Ahmed577,

I know it is not probably liked on a nice Purdey but the Leupold lower variables such as 1.5-5x are slimmer and smaller for such firearms and still work well.

The German and Austrian scopes usually are heavier with 30mm tubes.

I know most guys prefer a Zeiss, Swarovski, Schmidt & Bender, etc on their night UK and European doubles however. Irrespective of their lesser balance.

I have owned many scopes, if my life depended on it I would only own a leopold. That said I would never put an American scope on a British gun. I know people who only drive landrovers.

Will choose a lighter and slimmer scope.
Perhaps a 2-7x36 Kahles or a slim 1" tube Swarovski.
And please, avoid the screws on the front claw mount plate…!
Regards.

A scope with blued steel tube would be better for such lovely rifle. I can't stand the look of modern scopes with heaps or turrets, buttons and knobs on....

Soldered "half rings" on a steel tube looks even better.

Perhaps a Nickel scope may look a little more fitting?

Not sure about balance but that was the brand I was also thinking of, but couldn't remember the name of it.

First vote would be Leupold, but if that is unacceptable, perhaps a vintage Euro scope?

I completely understand the lack of interest in a US scope on a vintage Brit double but with most all the Euro scopes now giant, Hubble-worthy pieces, I just think they dwarf a nice sleek double, even if not a tiny action like your own. Just my opinion, though. Fantastic rifle and look forward to seeing more.

Vintage 26mm tube Nickel-Supra 1-4x20 variable claw mounted on a plains game Purdey DR.
Not a too big scope, extremely tough and reliable, frequently encountered on post WW2 English doubles.
