Did BSA ever make a scope mount for a Lee Speed ? Did anyone else ever make one ? Curious

I vaguely remember seeing a Lee Speed with a Davidson setup such as you would see on a Fraser single shot, and sometimes other makes.

That setup would look good on a LS. It looks good on anything. The only trouble is there is no allowance to take up wear, so the shooter has to be very careful to keep things clean. They look very simple, but after making several sets I can assure you they're quite time consuming to make.

Using a small diameter scope certinly improves the look. It doesn't overpower the lines of a slim rifle.

I presume you mean for the Long Lee type action like your one, mounting is much easier & can be done without drilling the action on the CLLE & SMLE type .

I have not seen a light, later barrel profile like your's on a dust covered bolt action before.

Most use a side mount & you normally have to remove the dust cover, like these ones, not that this rifle had a dust cover.

Some others, this is one of our members, Dust cover removed.

More Dust Cover removed

Purdy Type, seen here on SMLE .

And this on a Gibbs

Yes Sarg, exactly. Thanks for the pics.I like the side mount ,obviousy the dust cover must be removed for that type of mount. Was there an original BSA type mount?

I don't really know about BSA making them. However as pointed out others of the English gun trade did. There was an old chap at the British Sporting Rifle Club at Bisley who had an original Lee Speed sporting rife which had a Q/D scope set up. However his was done in such a way that he had two bolts one witht eh cover fitted for use when he didn't want to use the scope and one with no bolt cover for scope use. Sorry I do not have photos and it's been about 15 years now since I saw the rifle.

A number of examples of the mount Sarg shows above were sold on eBay out of New Zealand, so they may have been made there, before or after WWII.

For Lee Speeds, I would say most of those that were scoped were done in the 20s and 30s, often using surplus sniper scopes from WWI, and often surplus mounts as well, though only certain types. Considering that thousands of such scopes were sold by the War Department in the 1920s, it is surprising how rarely one sees certain types of mount, such as Purdey or Holland & Holland. Probably the gunmakers preferred to supply new-made mounts.

On the other hand, the persistence with offset mounts despite the lessons of WWI could be interpreted as using up stocks on hand. But then again one can never over-estimate the inherent conservatism of British industry eh?!

The Gibbs is an interesting set up and I have photographs of similar mounts they supplied to the War Department in WWI.

Anybody got a few pictures of the set up offerred by H&H?

Buckbush - any picture of the mounts from the left side? Looks like the front mount encircles the barrel knox and rear uses a side bracket. Like to make something up for one of my Lee Speed without reving the dust cover. Info appreciated. Ron

I've found Imageshack problem and advert free. The interfaces take a little getting use to, but so do most of them.
