Ruger no.1.......to scope, or not?
      #262164 - 13/03/15 04:56 AM

My no.1 is in .416 Rigby. I've only shot it off-hand at about 75 yards. Every now and then I get the urge to put a scope on it. Seems what would be normal would be a 1.5-2X. These seem also to be the most expensive.....a costly gamble. Seems, also, open sights would be faster to come on target at closer ranges to which the .416 seems best suited. Wonder too what would be the cheapest scope that would hold up for a 'test'. Opinions, advice, experiences welcomed! Bill

I'd scope it with a Leupold 1.5-5x in good quality QD mounts.

On my #1 in 9.3 X 74R I mounted a Leupold 1.5-5X And am very happy with it. Al

Most of the good scope manufacturers today including Leupold offer a 1-6 x 24 which would be ideal for that rifle in that caliber. My colleague has on from Meopta and it is superb. The fastest way to acquire targets at close range is with an Aimpoint such as a H30L. It beats open sights hands down any time especially as you keep both eyes open.

On my #1 in .303 British I've got a Redfield 2-7x and like it very much.
On a big caliber I would go with the above sugestions of 1-5x.

I think it depends what you are using your 416 on and the type of hunting you do. I have a 404 and for what its used for I prefer it with the express sights. I must say though I have zero experience with Aimpoint type sights as mentioned by Waidmannsheil.

I had good luck with 2X Leuy's on 9.3x62 and .458's. Thought them to be the perfect scope for large game here in BC - but then,I could see better - LOL. Now, I like a bit more power.

So TennHillBilly, any thoughts yet on your choices?

I have a stainless No 1 in 35 Whelen with an MPI stock. I replaced the sights with the V notch rear and large white dot front sights off of a 375 Ruger Alaskan. Shoots right to POA at 75 meters.

Warne makes decent QR rings and I have a set on the 35 Whelen with a Leupold VX3 1.5-5x20. I think this combination works really well

I had another in7x57, a light weight and I used a NECGS peep sight with a gold bead front, it shoot well but I never took it out of the gun safe on a hunt. I wonder if that is telling or not?

I have put a NECG peep on my 450/400 because I could only use the fine sights in very good light, I did need to put a taller front post on as well. Love the peep - very easy and very accurate. I also have a 1-5 scope that I have used for load testing and some hunting and that works really well but the peep works so well I rarely put it on.

I have a Leupold VX3 1.5-5 with heavy duplex on my #1 in 450/400. To me it's the right power, has generous eye relief, and looks like it belongs on it.
