Another of my #1 Lee Speeds
      #261603 - 04/03/15 10:44 AM

As I mentioned in my most recent thread, I have but 2 #1 H.V.S.R. Lee Speed rifles remaining, because of that darned pesky, heavy rib & here are some photos of it.

This one shoots VERY nicely (3/4" 3 shot group at 50 yds., which is about the best I can do nowadays with express sights), with my favourite PRVI (PPU) brass, CCI LR primers, Alliant RL15, & Hornady 174 gr. bullets. But, because of its very shiny, tight bore (0.301" & 0.309"), it does a bang-up job with Hornady .308" 220 gr. RNSP IL's & W760, too!

I apologize for the poor quality of the photos.

You certainly have fine taste in rifles.
I myself am infatuated by the .303 British in all manner of sporting rifles. Single shot falling blocks are my favorites but Lee Speeds are a very close second.
Your choice of load componants are identical to mine in evey respect.
Thank you again for posting these pictures for our enjoyment. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.

Thank you for all the kind comments.

I thought it would be nice to have a kind of permanent record.

IOWA 303
My only falling block is a J. Burrow #3B trade-pattern Farquharson in .375 Fl. N.E. 2 1/2".

I used to own Ruger #1A's in .30-06, .303, .375 H&H, .45-70 & a custom in .500 N.E. 3", but sold them all because of their weight, lack of balance & just very poor "feel" & lack of "liveliness", especially compared to my Lee Speeds & other British rifles.

I currently have 7 rifles chambered for the .303 Flanged Nitro Express 2 1/4" (my own moniker, which I find has a much nicer ring to it than .303 British and when asked what the rifle is chambered for, I don't get that demeaning old "oh, it's just another 303" when I am at the range with one of them, as 303's have become quite passe up here as they were the most-oft seen rifles up here in the bush, more so than the thutty-thutty chambered Model 94 carbine); the 2 #1 Pattern rifles & 1 Pattern #2 rifle featured here, a #3 Pattern Lee Speed carbine yet to be featured, & 4 made up rifles, starting with commercial #1 Mk. III B.S.A.Co. actions, on which the bolt handles have been ground & swept forward, at least for those who did not have it already done, very tightly bored commercial Churchill or Cogswell & Harrison barrels fitted & headspaced thereon, bedded into commercial 1950's era Sile manufactured stocks that have had their white-line spacers & varnish finish removed, refinished with b.l. or tung oil & re-chequered & no-drill scope bases fitted. Of the three just mentioned, 1 is fitted with Schmidt und Bender 1.5-6x42 (#1 reticle) & Kahles Helia S 2.2-9x42 (#4 reticle) scopes on Leupold QRW 30mm rings (my tree stand rifle given the weight of the scopes & the rifle's tendancy to be top-heavy); the second is fitted with IOR 4x32 (#4 reticle) & Adler Luxus 2.5x20 (#1 reticle) on Weaver Low pivot rings, while the last is fitted with Swarovski Habicht Nova 4x32 (#4 reticle) & Bausch & Lomb Balvar 1.5-6x32 (Duplex reticle) on Leupold QRW 1" rings.

ORN,
303 flanged N.E. 2 1/4"' I like that!
Around my parts the 303 British in a sporting rifle is, lets say, "unique".
People I shoot and hunt with know I like the less than popular calibers and just accept that I find the 30-06 boring. Not bad, just boring.

IOWA 303:
Thank you.

Here are the 3 I mentioned above.

So if you don't like the common, mundane calibers, let me guess, you also shoot .400/360 Rimless Nitro Express 2 1/4" (aka 9.3x57), .256 Gibbs Magnum Rimless Nitro Express (aka 6.5x55) & .366 Mauser (9.3x62), although the last is becoming pretty common, like me?

Regards,

Jim

Jim,
Yes I shoot the 9.3x57, 6.5x55, 6.5x54 MS, 7.5x55, 32/40, 8.15x46r and a 10.4x38r.
I do have 1 rifle chambered in 30-06. Its a M1 Garand that I shoot Highpower matches with.

By the way; is .256 Gibbs Magnum similar as 6,5x55 or is it 6,5x57 with 2mm shortened case ? And .400/360 Rimless Nitro Express 2 1/4 should have rimmed case which 9,3x57 doesn´t have. But there exists wildcat caliber like this: http://93x57r.se/

IOWA303:
Neat choice of calibres. Mine are not too dissimilar. Other than ones already mentioned: .22 L.R., .223, 256 Fraser Flanged N.E. (aka .256 Swift Flanged, aka .256 Gibbs Flanged, aka .256 Mannlicher, aka 6.5x53R), .275 Bland (aka .275 Rigby Rimless H.V., .276 Rimless N.E. 2 1/4", aka 7x57), .298 Minex, .30 W.C.F. (aka .30-30), .300 Rimless N.E. (aka .30 U.S. 1906, aka .30-06), .330 Rimless Nitro Express 2 1/2" (aka .338-06, aka .338-06 A-Square), .350 Rimless N.E. 2 1/2" (aka .35 Whelen), .375 Flanged Nitro Express 2 1/2", .450 Belted Rimless N.E. 2 1/2" (aka .458 Winchester Magnum) & .50 muzzleloader, built on a #1 Mk. III receiver

Igorrock:
.256 Gibbs Magnum Rimless is 6.5x55 as loaded for George Gibbs Bristol, England. The base is larger than the 6.5x57, shoulder is different, &c. The Gibbs Rimless N.E. is 6.5x54 M.S., while the .256 Gibbs Flanged N.E. is also known as the 6.5x53R or .256 Mannlicher.

.....Rimless NE 2 1/4".....should have a rimmed case...
Huh???

Ash
Which one? I've got 2 that I'm thinking of unsoldering & throwing away the ribs from (and then, of course, power polishing & hot bluing the rifles to make them all shiny & pretty)?

;-)
