Calibers for Africa- Members' survey
      #261577 - 04/03/15 04:34 AM

A survey of members' cartridge preferences for hunting the dark continent.
1.What is your personal favorite cartridge for plains game?
2.What is your personal favorite cartridge for dangerous game?
You may already have hunted with this caliber or it may be a cartridge you would like to own.
Your choice may be a factory round or a wildcat.
In case of a tie between two cartridges please name both.

When 300 replies are in the results for both categories will be posted under the title
Calibers for Africa- Members'survey-Results

Far too standard and far too predictable, but my choice would probably be

1. .30-06
2. .375

Favourite would depend on the circumstances. Is the plains game hunting conducted during a dangerous game hunt as well? Then my answer would be different.

First my simple choice for the survey is:

1. 8x68S
2. .450 NE

But not for the survey but as part of a discussion if plains game is hunted along with dangerous game, I would choose:

.375 H&H Mag
.450 NE

The above allows redunancy. If the double is not being held, th .375 will work fine. If a scoped shot is needed, the .375 is also available.

A good standard choice has been named several times and these I used as well. My first plains game hunt, a single .30-06 was taken. For my capd buffalo and plains game hunt, I took just a .375. I might substitute a .404 these days if I wanted a small amount of extra grunt.

.30-06
.375 H&H Mag (or .404)

Due to weight considerations, I have always only taken one rifle except for one hunt when I took a 9.3x74R DR and a .450 NE DR. But I borrowed a 8x68S off Karl Stumpfe to try it out. So I would be comfortable with a .375 H&H Mag for everything, and if a .375 Flanged double with a scope, perfect.

The results will be interesting. So far all are almost different except for the .30-06 and .375 and a couple of Lotts.

This is what I took with me on three hunting trips, a total of eleven weeks in Africa:

1. .300 H&H
2. .505 SRE (equivalent to .500 NE)

I also had a .375 H&H/.458 Winchester Magnum double rifle along, but used it only rarely, the .375 more often than the .458.

Not that I've ever been to Africa, but if I went, and did take two rifles, I would take a 30/06 and a 416 Rem. Most likely, when I do go, it will be a buffalo hunt with a few plains game sprinkled in. In that case, I will probably take my 375 Ruger alone.

Never been there - always wanted to go and if I did, I'd take a 6.5 - either .260 or 6.5x284 Mauser and a 9.3x62 or my .375/06IMP - which is about the same thing, except for the factory ammo availablility.

Everything could be done with the 9.3 or .375 with quick take-off mounts - that worked.
