In the States, the Jenks Carbines were a sort of earlier or same time equivalent = the raising tang mounted lever (line the monkey tail) pulled back a plunger(like the monkey tail) opened up a hole in the top breech end of the barrel (like a Ferguson rifle), where loose ball and powder could be loaded, the tang's lever closed the side slapper capped and thus ready to fire.

Great read, thank you. There's some beautiful, well engraved sporters by Westley Richards on these guns.

Wow Ash. Nice little rifle. Funny thing is I had a Snider almost identical but for the sights in .577. Wish I had pics of it. I couldn't hit a flock of barns with it and let it go to a collector. Kicked like an unholy mule with the shorter barrel. Made some impressive pyrotechnics though. Nice to see someone putting that one back to right.
