A few months ago while on a hunt with the Double Rifle Shooters Society I handled and fired 2 rounds from a Krieghoff 500/416. At about 40 yards a soft and a solid were touching.
The 500/416 is a good cartridge giving ballistics equal to the 416 Rem Mag and the 416 Rigby.
I would prefer a 500/416 Krieghoff Double to ANY 416 bolt rifle for any animal I would hunt with a 416.
I would definately have the Krieghoff fitted with a scope in QD mounts. Even if I did not use the scope with 400 grain bullets, I would have a load with 300 grain bullets for lesser big game. With 300 grain bullets and scope, the 500/416 would make an excellent leopard rifle. For lion I would use 400 grain bullets.

Many will attest to the fact, that despite what the formula is for kinetic energy is for the bullet comming out of the muzzle is (e=1/2m * v^2): recoil is heavily infulenced by bullet weight. The 500/416 will recoil less than a 458 lott or 470 nitro with 500 grain bullets given the same rifle weight, but will still murder any animal on this planet. Therefore - I think is a great round.

How is ammo avalibility, and price with this round?

How about reloading it? Are the cases easy to get a hold of?

Thanks

Asquare still makes them... and it appears that they have some bell cases on sale at midway!

Price wise, ALL of these damn things 450,470,505 etc... seem to cost $2/each.

I wish they were $2 apiece-try more like $12 apiece. Krieghoff has loaded ammo in both Woodleigh softs and solids loaded for them by W. Romey in Germany.

sorry, I roll my own - that was a quick "round nunber" for brass only.

Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever purchased a box of "premium ammo."

And I sure as heck have never paid $200.00 for a box of federal 470's.

Is the recoil from the 416/500 considerably more then a 450/400? What about real world performance?

Yes the recoil of the 500/416 is greater. I own a 450/400 3 inch. The 500/416 is just on the edge of what I like.

I am a big fan of the Sweet 40s. .408, .411, .416. All are long, good penetrating bullets. The 500/416 will give you a leg up in velocity from my 450/400, but the trade off for me isn't worth it due to recoil.

I feel that the 500/416 will become a great double rifle standard. If I had one it would have to weigh 11 LBS. for me to be comfortable with the recoil.

Now felt recoil is unique to each individual. I suggest you try each if you can. The best double rifle is the one you like and own!

Ya know, you really need to consider the weight of the rifle when you talk recoil.

I have a 459 Win Mag which fires a 500g Hornady at 2000 fps from a 22 inch barrel. That rifle is a M98 and has a steel butt plate, and slip on recoil pad. The recoil of that is indistinquishable from my good friend's Searcy 500 NE. I fired both, back to back, and I can't tell a difference between them.

Now, to make things really interesting, my good buddy fired his 500NE Searcy, a Ruger 458 Lott, and a 375. Turns out the 375 had the most recoil; the reason being the 375 was the lightest of the three and the 458 Lott had a mercury recoil reducer installed. The 500 NE was the heaviest of the three.

So, all things being equal are not always equal.

On the subject of brass, BeLL BRASS
Mast technology still has some of it inventory left. You might give them a call. YOu might get a break on the price of what they have left?
