A Good Day with the Flyrod

Just tossed a story up on the web about a red-letter day with the 9-weight recently.

Only scored 3 barra for the day, however they were 75cm and 96cm in the morning, and a 105cm horse in the late arvo. Still grinning...!

105cm Barra from the bank, amongst the paperbarks!

All were taken on that gold/orange/black flash-tail rattle rouser I like to tie. Although ugly, its a terrific dirty-water fly for big barra.

Birdhunter50, of the ones I´ve eaten the saltwater or brackish water ones were fabulous, the freshwater ones weren´t as good but our Ozzie friends will know better than me, best

What Mike said. Those in most fresh-water lagoons and impoundments are dark in colour and can take on a 'muddy' taste originating from algae in the water. Saltwater fish on the other hand are quite silver and are very good eating. Barramundi are catadromous, the opposite of salmon.

No idea of weight, I have lengths marked on my flyrod and use that (or a tape-measure if in my boat) to get a quick length before release. Saltwater barra generally get released into my ice-box!

The Fly is a flash-tail rattle-rouser, simply Jon Cave's pattern with a big bunch of gold Krystal-Flash tied in at the tail. I used to use half Lateral-Scale and half Krystal-Flash but the former does not stand up to repeated casting and big munchies very well, so mostly Krystal-Flash these days. Tied on the Trey Coombes designed 4/0 Gamakatsu SL12S Big Game flyhook.


Early ties with gold Lateral-Scale in the tails.

Oh - my post is gone!

Great fish Marrakai - especially on a fly rod.
They'd be ever more fun on a double hander - 14' to 15'- and 10 or 11 wgt. Power about like the single 9 and 10, but a LOT more long-rod pumping 'action'. A great catch on a #9 rod - Bravo!

From your description Marrakai they have a rattle tied in, is it that copper thing on the shank ? Where do you get those ?

Thanks. I was wondering if you catch and release, but thought you would call me silly, they go in the ice-box!

Re flavour, I find ANY wild caught barra is preferrable to the fish farm barra we have in Southern supermarkets, which are bland in comparison.

The pyrex or plastic rattles are probably intended to be inserted into soft-plastic lures, squidgies etc, but work well for large flies when tied into a braided mylar tube.

A Google search for "glass rattles for lures" will give you plenty of options, here is Barlow's offering for example. Plastic ones are more durable but harder to find.

Click here for a Rattle-Rouser recipe from Chris Beech, his article in the Australian "Fly Life" magazine a few years ago was my inspiration. The additional flash-tail in my tie adds size and bulk, and helps the fly 'light up' a larger patch of turbidity, making it easier for the fish to find in dirty water.

Marrakai or anyone here who might be able to help. Can anyone get me a few of those rattles in a few different sizes. Barlows mentioned above need a minimum order of $100 to ship international !! I don´t need that many rattles. I can wire the money (that costs me 20$ or I can pay by paypal. Thx in advance if anyone can help, best

Looks like you had a great time with the flyrod.
I can't wait to get out on my small river with a 6 wt and chase smallmouth bass.
Just going to have to dream about it for at least 2 months until the deep freeze we are in subsides.

Matt - I used to fish locally with #5's and 6's. I've since switched to 4's - much more lively. They'd be fun on small and largemouth bass, but you do need some line weight for bigger poppers and surface flies. Maybe a 6 or 7 is best?

Daryl- I have used a 4 wt rod in the past for bass. Just did not like the way they cast with large flies. I use the 4's only for trout and panfish these days.
When pursuing large toothy fish I turn to an overlined 8 wt.

Large flies, heavier rods, for sure. Trying to cast a 3-0 to 6-0 salmon fly on an 8 weight, is asking for a fly stuck into your back. Been there. The big rods handle them easily.
